WSJ pC5 "Blue chips get bounce in defensive trading" by Brendan Conway says US blue chips rose but other measures lagged behind as risk averse investors dumped materials & tech shares.

Fin Times p24 "Deal for Southern Union helps to add power to energy sector" by Michael Stothard says shares in Southern Union jumped after Energy Transfer Eqity said it would buy the gas pipeline operator for $4.2 bil, while the wider markets came back slightly from the losses in the prior session as sentiment was lifted by some promising economic data. Fin'l stocks were the best performing int he session with Bank of America adding 1%.

NYT pB6 "Uncertainty over Greece weights on markets" by Chris Hauser says fin'l markets remained unsettled amid concerns about political stability in Greece & the fate of a 2nd Greek bailout, sending investors into less risky assets. American Express led the Dow, rising $1.13. Hewlett-Packard rose 2.1% & Home Depot gained 1.8%.

Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Stocks reverse lower, finish mixed" by Paul Whitfield says after rising, stocks reversed lower & notched fresh lows as the market was mixed in lower volume. The current outlook is the market is still in a correction.

USA Today p4B "Stocks rebound on housing, jobless data that top forecasts" by Bloomberg says US stocks rebounded a day after the S&P 500 fell to a 3 month low, as better than estimated housing starts & jobless claims data tempered concern about a slowdown in the economy.

As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Today's trailing P/E is 13.61 up from yesterday's trailing P/E of 13.54 (year ago it was 15.17); today's P/E estimate is 12.01 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.01 (year ago it was 12.56), and today's dividend yield is 2.50 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.52 (last year it was 2.66). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,580.46 up 8.48 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,571.98. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.68 down 0.79 from Wednesday's average closing price of $52.40. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $44.38 (AXP/JPM) down 0.50 from Wednesday's median closing price of $44.88. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $91.58 +0.55 0.6% 2,987,261 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $10.6 +0.10 0.95% 198,925,951 NYSE.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $848 (158,046 - $157,198).

MarketWatch Thursday 6/17/11 4:48 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks recovered to end mostly higher Thursday after a choppy session had Wall Street veering between the debt crisis in Greece and U.S. economic data that offered some respite. “It’s wait-and-see ahead of the weekend,” said Peter Boockvar, equity strategist at Miller Tabak, of talks involving the European Union and the International Monetary Fund. “Everything comes down to getting money from the IMF, and how to go about having private bond holders having to give up something as part of this bailout package.”
And, jobless claims “falling was a sigh of relief considering it’s disappointed almost every week for the past eight,” Boockvar added of new applications for unemployment benefits dropping more than analysts predicted. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 64.25 points, or 0.5%, to 11,961.52, a level that leaves it 0.5% higher than last Friday’s close. Up 0.2% on the week, the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index climbed 2.22 points, or 0.2%, to end at 1,267.64, with utilities and consumer staples faring best and natural-resource companies hit the hardest among its 10 industry groups. “Chart watchers are keeping a close eye on the roughly 1,250 area for the S&P, as it represents support using a number of different technical indicators. Any positive news out of Greece should lead to a decent short-term rally, assuming the situation does get resolved soon,” said Michael Sheldon, chief market strategist at RDM Financial. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 7.76 points, or 0.3%, to 2,623.70, down 0.3% on the nearly finished week. Decliners edged ahead of advancers on the New York Stock Exchange, where nearly 1.1 billion shares. Stock futures trimmed their decline before the start of the regular trading session after jobless claims fell more than expected and housing starts also beat estimates, helping rein in anxiety about the economy. And prospects for Greece brightened a bit, after the International Monetary Fund vowed to continue to support Greece, saying in an emailed statement that it anticipates a “positive outcome“ at the next meeting of euro-zone leaders. Research In Motion is expected to report a drop in net income when it issues quarterly earnings late Thursday, as the company struggles to sell higher-priced models of its BlackBerry family. “What happens in Greece over the next several days is probably the biggest issue facing the market in the near term, there’s been a lot of talk but no final action taken to resolve the situation, and the longer this goes on the more uncertainty it creates,” said RDM Financial’s Sheldon. Others played down the impact on the ongoing trouble overseas. “Typically the market never discounts the same news twice, and bull markets never end on old news. This is just a lack of buying interest and no selling pressure,” said Keith Springer, president of Springer Financial Advisors. “The only thing that will make this market go up is earnings, and that’s a few weeks away,” Springer added. The Labor Department reported new applications for unemployment benefits fell 16,000 to 414,000 last week, while construction began on 560,000 homes in May, up 3.5% from the prior month. Read full report on jobless claims. Not long after the opening bell, the major indexes briefly fell into the red after a manufacturing index from the Philadelphia Federal Reserve proved disappointing. The Philadelphia Fed’s manufacturing index declined from plus 3.9 in May to a negative 7.7 in June, and came after a negative reading from the New York Fed on Wednesday. The prior day’s report on factory activity in the New York region had already “alerted market participants to the idea that manufacturing weakness extended into June,” said Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG LLC.
