Post No. 1,067 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of May 23, 2011 and Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of May 24, 2011.

A read of the print editions of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Georgia - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Monday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 11,952.97 up 1.06 or 0.01% from Friday's close of 11,951.91. For the year the Dow is up 3.24%. Of the 30 Dow components 17 gained and 13 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was JPMorgan JPM $41.67 +0.62 1.51% 31,684,557 NYSE and percentage-wise was Pfizer PFE $20.46 +0.35 1.74% 42,762,269 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Caterpillar CAT $95.44 -1.35 1.39% 9,758,629 NYSE.

WSJ pC5 "Blue chips inch higher; energy, tech stocks slide" by Brendan Conway says buyout activity helped US blue-chip stocks eke out a gain, although the economic worries that have driven 6 consecutive weeks of losses kept traders cautious & weighed on the tech sector. Pfizer led the blue chips as it rose 35 cents. Caterpillar led the Dow's decliners shedding $1.35. Hewlett-Packard was also weak falling 0.48 cents.

Fin Times p24 "Gains from M&A activity tempered by sharp losses in energy sector" by Michael Stothard says M&A activity int he retail, fin'l & industrial sectors helped Wall St kick off the week in positive territory after 6 straight weeks of losses, but the gains were limited by sharp losses in the energy sector.

NYT pB8 "Shares eke out increase after 6 weeks of losses" by Bloomberg says stocks rose on Mon after 6 weeks of losses, as an increase in takeovers & the cheapest valuations in almost a year helped offset concerns about a slowdown in the economic recovery.

USA Today p4B "News of several acquisitions acts as market stabilizer" by Bloomberg says stocks were little changed Mon, stabilizing after 6 weeks of losses, as a pickup in takeovers & the cheapest valuations in nearly a year helped offset concerns about a slowdown in the economic recovery.

As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Tuesday's trailing P/E is 13.60 unchanged from Monday's trailing P/E of 13.60 (year ago it was 14.82); today's P/E estimate is 12.01 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 12.01 (year ago it was 12.56), and today's dividend yield is 2.50 unchanged from Monday's dividend yield of 2.46 (last year it was 2.72). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,579.34 up 0.14 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,579.20. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.64 unchanged from Friday's average closing price of $52.64. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $44.96 (AXP/JPM) up 0.56 from Friday's median closing price of $44.40. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $91.3 +0.57 0.63% 2,542,730 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $10.97 +0.17 1.57% 185,162,051 NYSE.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $14 ($157,920 - $157,934).

MarketWatch Monday 6/13/11 5:07 pm by Kate Gibson says US large-cap stocks posted minor gains Monday, as enthusiasm over a burst of corporate deals overshadowed global economic worries that were amplified by a rating agency’s downgrade of Greece. “There’s life out there in the markets, and maybe if investors won’t buy stocks, companies will,” said Kim Caughey Forrest, senior equity analyst at Fort Pitt Capital Group. “Companies have a lot of cash on their balance sheets, and there are good mergers and acquisitions out there to be had.” After last week’s fall below 12,000, its first since March, the Dow Jones Industrial Average on Monday made a bid to reclaim that level before closing under it. The index of established, large U.S. companies ended up 1.06 points to 11,952.97, with 19 of its 30 components gaining. Pfizer Inc. led gainers, rising 1.7% after The Wall Street Journal reported the pharmaceutical giant plans to go to court this week, in an effort to extend exclusive rights to sell its anti-impotence pill Viagra, which has annual U.S. sales of $1 billion. The S&P 500 Index ended up 0.85 points to 1,271.83, with financials faring the best and energy the worst among its 10 industry groups. Oil futures fell $1.99 at $97.30 a barrel Monday. Oil is still up 31% in the past year. “We’ve hit a soft patch. I think oil prices really did a number on the consumer, and we’re going to see it work its way out of the system for a while,” pointed out Caughey Forrest. The Nasdaq Composite Index , which includes more small-cap stocks than the S&P 500 and Dow industrials, ended down 4.04 points at 2,639.69.
The Russell 2000 , also viewed as a small-cap gauge, lost 2.3 points to 777.2. For every 14 stocks gaining, 17 fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume was 908.3 million. “We got a bit of a pop from a couple of buyouts, but I think the market is very preoccupied with debt, whether it’s the debt limit in the U.S. or sovereign-debt issues in Europe,” said Paul Nolte, managing director at Dearborn Partners. Standard & Poor’s Ratings Service on Monday said it lowered its long-term, sovereign-credit ratings on Greece and that the downgrade reflected its view of an increased risk of default. “S&P isn’t saying anything new, but it does cloud the position of the [European Central Bank], which is in favor of no default whatsoever,” wrote Peter Boockvar, equity strategist at Miller Tabak. A handful of stocks gained on deal announcements. Transatlantic Holdings Inc. rallied 9.5% a day after the reinsurer agreed to join forces with Switzerland’s Allied World Assurance Company Holdings AG. Read round-up of merger announcements. Timberland Co. shares gained 44% after VF Corp. said it would acquire the footwear and apparel company. VF gained 10%. Read more on VF's deal for Timberland. Also, Wendy’s/Arby’s Group Inc. rose 0.9% after Roark Capital Group said it would buy a controlling stake in the fast-food chain. Read more on the Wendy's sale of Arby's. The House and Senate will be in session this week, with Congress facing an August deadline for raising the federal debt limit. “I find it very difficult to believe we could go into default even for a day, but it looks like they are going to battle this all the way to the end,” said Caughey Forrest at Fort Pitt Capital. To Dearborn Partners’ Nolte, “it’s not so much a worry about default or raising the debt ceiling; it’s more of a divide between the politicians and the general public [and a public perception] that politicians seem to be fiddling as Rome is burning.”
