WSJ pC5 "Win streak ends" by Jonathan Cheng says US stocks snapped a 4 day winning streak stumbling in late trading after the Fed Res issued a cautious economic outlook just days before it ends is asset buying program. The markets started the day in negative territory, clambering to a modest gain before falling after Fed Chair Bernanke ended an afternoon press conference.

Fin Times p24 "Strong earnings & positive outlook lift FedEx as wider market falls" by Michael Stothard says industrial transport stocks climbed after FedEx reported strong 4 Qtr earnings & gave a positive outlook for the year, but the wider markets fell into negative territory after Bernanke gave a cautious assessment of the US economy. In the energy sector, Exxon fell 0.9%.

NYT pB7 "Shares slip as Fed shaves growth forecast" & USA Today p4B "Fed's lower economic growth forecast sends stocks down" both by Bloomberg says stocks declined halting a 4 day rally after the Fed Res lowered its forecast for economic growth & said it planned to end its $600 bil debt purchase program this month as scheduled.

As of the open of the market Thursday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Thursday's trailing P/E is 13.78 down from yesterday's trailing P/E of 13.87 (year ago it was 14.97); today's P/E estimate is 12.15 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.15 (year ago it was 12.90), and today's dividend yield is 2.47 up from Wednesday's dividend yield of 2.48 (last year it was 2.69). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,600.43 down 10.23 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,610.66. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of today's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.35 down 0.34 from yesterday's average closing price of $53.69. The median closing price of today's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $45.27 (AXP/JPM) up 0.04 from Tuesday's median closing price of $45.23. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $92.8 -0.63 0.67% 2,661,743 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $10.79 -0.04 0.37% 102,011,279 NYSE.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,026 ($161,069 - 160,043).

MarketWatch Wednesday 6/22/11 4:11 pm by Laura Mandaro says US stocks ended with solid losses Wednesday after the Federal Reserve lowered its economic forecast and Chairman Ben Bernanke commented on the risks to the U.S. from a European debt default. After trading close to the flatline ahead of Bernanke's 2:15 p.m. news conference, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the session down 80.3 points, or 0.7%, to 12,109.67. The S&P 500 slid 8.4 points, or 0.7%, to 1,287.14. The Nasdaq Composite lost 18.07 points, or 0.7%, to 2,669.19. Bernanke said U.S. banks' direct exposure to Greece was small but noted a disorderly sovereign default would likely roil global financial markets. He also said it was unclear how much of the U.S. slowdown was temporary or permanent.
