Exxon is charted under Good News dues to OPEC's inability to reach consensus on boosting oil production.

Fin Times p28 "Energy companies are bright spot on another downbeat trading day" by Michael Stothard says energy stocks such as Exxon and Cabot made strong gains as oil prices rose, but in the wider markets' sentiment was again downbeat, dragging the broader indices into their 6th straight session of losses. Exxon, the largest firm in the world by market cap, was up 1%. McDonald's same store sales for May missed expectations, but were still up 3.1% and their shares were flat and are charted.

NYT pB10 "Sahrs fall, struggling after Bernanke's talk" by Reuters says Wall St. extended losses for the 6th straight day Wed as a bearish assessment of the economy from Bernanke kept investors nervous.

USA Today p4B "S&P 500 losing streak grows: longest in more than 2 years" by Bloomberg says stocks retreated Wed, sending the S&P 500 to its longest losing streak since Feb '09, as raw materials & tech shares slumped amid growing concern the economy is slowing.

As of the open of the market Thursday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Thursday's trailing P/E is 13.71 down from Wednesday's trailing P/E of 13.73 (year ago it was 14.39); today's P/E estimate is 12.40 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.40 (year ago it was 12.36), and the most recent dividend yield is 2.48 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.47 (last year it was 2.80). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,592.01 down 2.82 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,594.83. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.07 down $0.09 from Tuesday's average closing price of $53.16. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $44.25 (AXP/JPM) down 0.56 from Tuesday's median closing price of $44.81. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $60.69 -0.54 0.88% 3,021,774 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $10.54 -0.11 1.03% 157,470,239 NYSE.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $282 ($159,483 - $159,201).

MarketWatch Wednesday 6/8/11 4:12 pm by Laura Mandaro says US stocks on Wednesday fell for a sixth straight session, marking the longest losing streak for the S&P 500 since February 2009, as investors culled positions in stocks most leveraged to economic growth, including resources and technology. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 21.87 points, or 0.2%, to 12,048.94, led by more than 1% drops in Caterpillar, Inc. , Alcoa, Inc. and American Express Co. It was the Dow's longest losing stretch since July. The S&P 500 ended down 5.38 points, or 0.4%, to 1,279.56, led by drops in materials and financial sectors.
