Post No. 1,674 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of Wednesday's  Wall St. Journal, Financial   Times,  Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 12,573.8 up 167.57 or 1.31% from Monday's close of 12,411.23. For the year the Dow is up 2.92%. Of the 30 Dow components  29 gained and  only United Technologies declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was  Boeing up $2.56 or 3.65%.  The only and biggest decliner dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was  United Technologies down 29 cents or 0.39%.

WSJ pC4 "Blue chips surge while debt markets swoon" by Chris Dieterich says US stocks soared while markets in Europe continued their turmoil Tues in a demonstration of the latest volatility in global fin'l markets.  Fin'l stocks saw a late surge as an exec from Bank of America said that capital market conditions in the 2nd half are shaping up to be better than last year.  Bank of America and JPMorgan both rose 2.9%.

Inv. Bus. Daily pB4 "NYSE composite leads broad gains in mixed trade" by David Saito-Chung says the market's seesaw character stretched for a 4th straight session Tues as the major indexes posted 1% plus gains amid a skimpy backdrop of news.  Tues's action was broad gains in mixed trade as the current outlook is the market is in a correction.  Within the Dow it was a revenge of the nerds moment as mostly scrawn and weak names gained 2% or more such as Alcoa and Bank of America.  American Express and Intel also rose at least 2%.

NYT pB9 "Wall St is lifted by speculation that the Fed Res will act to spur the economy" & same story in USA Today p4B "Stocks rally on speculation Fed will act to spur growth" by Bloomberg says stocks advanced on Tues amid speculation the Fed will act to stimulate the economy and after the European Central Bank endorsed a plan to guarantee bank deposits.  JPMorgan added 95 cents as CEO Dimon plans to testify before Congress.  Boeing climbed $2.47 after its was raised to outperform by Sanford Bernstein and Air Lease may purchase over 60 737's.

As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.85 up from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.68 (year ago it was 13.60); today's P/E estimate is 11.75 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 11.75 (year ago it was 12.01) and today's dividend yield is 2.68 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.70 (last year it was 2.50). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,661.37 up  21.49 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,639.88. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.38 up $0.72 from Monday's average closing price of $54.66. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $51.05 (HD/DD) up $1.04 from Monday's median closing price of $50.01. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $2,149 ($166,137 - $163,988 ).

MarketWatch Tues. 4:10 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks rallied Tuesday to recoup much of the prior day's steep drop, with a range-bound market on the prowl for signs of central bank action and any developments related to Europe. "The volatility of the past few weeks is probably going to be be with us through the summer," said Michael Sheldon, chief market strategist at RDM Financial Group Inc. in Westport, CT. After Monday's 142.97-point fall, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +1.31% rose 162.57 points, or 1.3%, to finish at 12,573.80. The S&P 500 Index SPX +1.17% added 15.25 points, or 1.2%, to 1,324.18, leaving it 0.1% off for the week so far. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.19% advanced 33.34 points, or 1.2%, to 2,843.07, down 0.5% from Friday's close.
