The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 12,824.39  down 12.94 or 0.1% from Tuesday's close of 12,837.33.  Of the 30 Dow components 15  gained and15   declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was JPMorgan up $1.03 or 2.91%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Procter & Gamble down $1.82 or 2.93%.

As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.15 up from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.04 (year ago it was 13.74); today's P/E estimate is 12.05 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 12.05 (year ago it was 12.15) and today's dividend yield is 2.60 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.62 (last year it was 2.48). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,694.48 down 1.71   from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,696.19. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.48 down  $0.06 from Tuesday's average closing price of $56.54. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $51.92  (HD/DD) down 1.50 from Monday's median closing price of $53.42. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $171 ($169,619 - 1$169,448).

MarketWatch Wed.. 4:13  pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks ended mostly lower on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 halting its longest winning run since late May, after the Federal Reserve cut its economic growth estimates and Chairman Ben Bernanke said the jobs market had lost some steam. "If we're not seeing sustained improvement in the labor market that would require additional action," Bernanke told reporters at a news conference after the Fed said it would expand its bond-buying program through the end of the year. "Extending Operation Twist beyond the election was a smart move. He can lean on Congress and the White House to address fiscal issues sooner rather than later," said Ryan Sweet, senior economist at Moody's Analytics. The Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA -0.10% fell 12.94 points, or 0.1%, to 12,824.39. Ending a four-session streak of gains, the S&P 500 SPX -0.17% lost 2.29 points, or 0.2%, to 1,355.69. Extending its rise into a fifth session, the Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.02% rose 0.7 point to 2,930.45.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 12,741.82 down 25.35 or 0.2% from Monday's close of 12,741.82. For the year the Dow is up 5.07%. Of the 30 Dow components 23 gained and 7 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Caterpillar up $2.12 and percentage-wise was cents or Bank of America 4.51%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was McDonald's down 67 cents and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard down 1.24%.

Tuesday's action was sizable gains in higher trade as the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

MarketWatch Tues. 4:14 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks indexes on Tuesday finished at five-week highs, with equities rising on thinking the Federal Reserve would make further moves to stimulate the economy. "It does seem like it's more out of hope for something that is coming than hard fact," said Bruce McCain, chief investment strategist at Key Private Bank, of expectations ahead of Wednesday's conclusion of the Federal Open Market Committee meeting.
