6/19/12 Tues pm Dow Closes at 12,837.33 up 95.51 or 0.75%

 The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 12,741.82 down 25.35 or 0.2% from Monday's close of 12,741.82. Of the 30 Dow components  23  gained and 7   declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise was  Caterpillar  up $2.12 and percentage-wise was  cents or Bank of America 4.51%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was McDonald's down 67 cents  and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard down 1.24%.

As of the open of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.04 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.07 (year ago it was 13.66); today's P/E estimate is 12.05 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 12.05 (year ago it was 12.15) and today's dividend yield is 2.62 unchanged from  yesterday's dividend yield of 2.62 (last year it was 2.50). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,696.19 up 12.62   from Monday's closing numerator of 1,683.57. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.54 up  $0.42 from Monday's average closing price of $56.12. The median closing price of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.02  (HD/DD) down 1.40 from Monday's median closing price of $53.42. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,262 ($168,691 - $168,357).

MarketWatch Tues. 4:14  pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks indexes on Tuesday finished at five-week highs, with equities rising on thinking the Federal Reserve would make further moves to stimulate the economy. "It does seem like it's more out of hope for something that is coming than hard fact," said Bruce McCain, chief investment strategist at Key Private Bank, of expectations ahead of Wednesday's conclusion of the Federal Open Market Committee meeting. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.75% rose 95.51 points, or 0.8%, to 12,837.33. The S&P 500 Index  SPX +0.98% climbed 13.20 points, or 1%, to 1,357.98. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.19% advanced 34.43 points, or 1.2%, to 2,929.76.

Dow Jones Average The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 12,741.82 down 25.35 or 0.2% from Friday's close of 12,767.13. Of the 30 Dow components 11 gained and 19 declined. For the year the Dow is up 4.29%. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was and percentage-wise was Home Depot up 52 cents or 1%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Chevron down 84 cents and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard down 2.89%.

WSJ pC4 "Europe stymies stocks" by Matt Jarzemsky says the S&P inched forward after Spanish borrowing costs rose to a record high and Greek political leaders sought to form a pro-bailout coalition following Sunday's jelection.  Hewlett-Packard led decliners, falling 59 cents.  Home Depot rose 45 cents as a reading on home builder confidence rose to a 5 year high.

Fin Times p24 "energy sector is S&P's weak link as crude prices sink further" by Kandy Wong says energy stocks were under pressure.  Microsoft lost 0.6% as it eas poised to introduce its own tablet.  Telecom index was up 0.2% but AT&T lost 0.2% and Verizon gained 0.6%.  US exporters were hit by European uncertainty as GE lost 1.3% and Hewlett-Packard lost 2.7%.  Fin'l were down as Bank of America lost 1.8% and JPMorgan was down 1.2%.

USA Today p6B "Market mixed as investors continue to fret about Europe" by AP says crisis weary traders scoffed Mon at what appeared to a be hopeful turn: a victory for pro-Europe parties in a Greek election.  US stocks were flat and borrowing costs for Spain surged to alarming levels.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,683.57 down 3.34 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,686.91. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get thedencrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

MarketWatch Mon. 4:12 pm by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks ended a low-volume session Monday with a loss for blue-chips and the third day of gains for the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500, as some better sentiment on Greece and U.S. housing data countered rising fears about Spain. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA-0.20% ended down 25.35 points, or 0.2%, at 12,741.82. Chevron Corp. CVX-0.83%contributed the most to the index's point loss. The S&P 500 SPX+0.14% rose 1.94 points, or 0.1%, to 1,344.78, led by homebuilder and tech stocks. The Nasdaq Composite COMP+0.78% added 22.53 points, or 0.8%, to 2,895.33. Volume was thin; 3.1 billion New York Stock Exchange-listed shares traded, or about 80% of the past month's average.
