Post No. 1,688 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 6/20/12 and Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 6/20/12.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 12,573.57  down 250.82 or 1.96% from Wednesday's close of 12,824.39.  Of the 30 Dow components only Merck  gained and 29   declined. The only and therefore biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Merck up 21 cents or 0.54%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Chevron down $3.75 or 4.25%.

As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.13 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.15 (year ago it was 13.87); today's P/E estimate is 12.05 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 12.05 (year ago it was 12.15) and today's dividend yield is 2.60 unchanged from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.60 (last year it was 2.48). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,661.34 down 33.14   from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,694.48. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.38 down $1.10 from Wednesday's average closing price of $56.48. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $50.39  (HD/DD) down 1.53 from Wednesday's median closing price of $51.92. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $3,314  ($169,448 - $166,134).

MarketWatch Thurs. 4:10   pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks fell sharply Thursday, with equities taking their second-hardest hit of the year after U.S. economic data largely disappointed, increasing worry about a global slowdown. Other economic reports had euro-area manufacturing slowing and a gauge of Chinese output also contracting. "We're entering summer, in politics this used to be called the 'silly season,' but I don't think there is a lot of focus on economic fundamentals right now. Some of the economic data is a little on the weak side, but to me the most important thing is the U.S. economy is not very vulnerable to recession right now," said David Kelly, chief market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -1.96% fell 250.82 points, or 2%, to 12,573.57. The S&P 500 SPX -2.23% lost 30.18 points, or 2.2%, to 1,325.51. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -2.44% retreated 71.36 points, or 2.4%, to 2,859.09.
