Post No. 1,685 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 12,741.82 down 25.35 or 0.2% from Monday's close of 12,741.82. For the year the Dow is up 5.07%. Of the 30 Dow components 23 gained and 7 declined. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was McDonald's down 67 cents and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard down 1.24%.

WSJ pC4 "Four wins in a row for stocks" by Chris Dieterich says speculation that US central bankers are set to unveil add'l stimulus measures lifted the S&P as tensions eased across Europe's fin'l markets.  Band of America led the Dow as Microsoft is charted under Good news as it advanced after it unveiled its Surface tablet.

Fin Times p26 "BofA  higher on talks to offload Merrill wealth unit to Julius Baer" by Kandy Wong says Bank of America shares ross after Julius Baer, the Swiss bank said it was in talks to buy Merrill's int'l wealth management biz.

USA Today p4B "Optimism about Fed stimulus action gives stocks a boost" by Bloomberg says stocks advanced Tues sending the S&P to the highest level in more than a month as investors think the Fed will announce more stimulus measures.  Bank of America was up 35 cents as the Fed Housing Fin. Agency said it will help banks avoid buying back mortgages.

NYT pB10 "Shares rise on hopes Fed will act" by Reuters says stocks rose Tues on hopes taht the Fed will extend stimulus measures.

Inv. Bus. Daily pB4 "Indexes regain key levels: mroe top stocks break out" by Vic Reklaitis says stocks achieved strong gains tues as the nasdaq and S&P stretched their winning streaks to 4 straight sessions.  Tuesday's action was sizable gains in higher trade as the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.15 up from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.04 (year ago it was 13.74); today's P/E estimate is 12.05 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 12.05 (year ago it was 12.15) and today's dividend yield is 2.60 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.62 (last year it was 2.48). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,696.19 up 12.62 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,683.57. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.54 up $0.42 from Monday's average closing price of $56.12. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.02 (HD/DD) down 1.40 from Monday's median closing price of $53.42. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,262 ($168,691 - $168,357).

MarketWatch Tues. 4:14 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks indexes on Tuesday finished at five-week highs, with equities rising on thinking the Federal Reserve would make further moves to stimulate the economy. "It does seem like it's more out of hope for something that is coming than hard fact," said Bruce McCain, chief investment strategist at Key Private Bank, of expectations ahead of Wednesday's conclusion of the Federal Open Market Committee meeting. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA+0.75% rose 95.51 points, or 0.8%, to 12,837.33. The S&P 500 Index SPX+0.98%climbed 13.20 points, or 1%, to 1,357.98.
