8/1/13 Thurs. am SEC Probing IBM: Johnson & Johnson Sells StayFree Unit

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,305  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal,   Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily,  New York Times,  USA Today, Atlanta Journal & amp; amp; Constitution  & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg)  yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 15499.54 down 21.05 or 0.14%  from Tuesday's close of 15520.59. For the year the Dow is up 18.28%. Of the Dow components 14    gained and   16 declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise   was 3M up 68 cents and percentage-wise was Disney up 0.73% .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was American Express down $1.42 or 1.89%.

WSJ pC4 "Blue chips stumble down into red" by Alexandra Scaggs says the Dow ended a bumpy day lower but the Dow closed out the month with a gain.  Stock indexes failed to find direction from the Fed's latest policy statement, though the release was taken as a positive by the bond market.

NYT pB2 "Fed support lifted Wall St. to best month since Jan" & AJC pA17 "July solid for stock market" by AP says the Dow edged lower Wed after wavering in response to the Fed's latest assessment of the US economy.

FT p22 "Facebook briefly tops IPO price as consumer stocks boost S&P" by Jason Abbruzzese says US indices ticked up after the release of FOMC minutes that said the Fed would continue its pace of bond buying & leave interest rates unchanged.  Healthcare stocks are among the best performers so far in the US earnings season.  UnitedHealth has been a part of that run and was up 0.8%.

IBD pB2 "Nasdaq stalls, cuts gains despite Fed's easy stance" by Paul Whitfield says stocks reversed off highs Wed even after the Fed said what the bulls wanted to hear.  Wed's action was up in rising vol but stalling on Nasdaq as the current outlook is still a confirmed uptrend.

As of the open  of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5   of   Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Thursday's   trailing P/E ratio is  16.68 down   from yesterday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.69 (last year it was 14.15);  today's    P/E estimate is  13.90 unchanged  from Wednesday's   P/E estimate of 13.90  (year ago it was 12.45) and today's    dividend yield is 2.37 unchanged   from yesterday's  dividend yield of 2.37  (last year it was 2.59). The Dow's all-time high was 15,567.74  on July  23, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2018.29 down 2.74 from Tuesday's losing numerator of 2021.03. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $67.28 down 7 cents    from Tuesday's average of $67.37.  The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $68.75   (DIS/UNH) up 42 cents  from Tuesday's median closing price of $68.23. The lowest volume was Travelers  and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $274    ($202,103 - $201,829).

MarketWatch 7/31/13 Wed. 4:01 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks on Wednesday finished little changed after the Federal Reserve offered few clues on potential changes to its monetary policy. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.14% fell 21.05 points, or 0.1%, to 15,499.54, after rising as high as 15,634.32, clearing intraday and closing records reached last week. The S&P 500 Index SPX -0.01% lost a fraction to 1,685.73, after rising to an intraday high of 1,698.44, putting it above its record close and a fraction below its intraday record of 1,698.78. "The S&P 500 continues to knock on the door at 1,700 without much luck. Eventually we think this psychological resistance will be taken out, triggering a small rally to the 1,735 to 1,765 area," wrote Sam Stovall, chief equity strategist at S&P Capital IQ, in emailed commentary. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.27% advanced 9.9 points, or 0.3%, to 3,626.37.
