8/30/13 Fri. am GE to Exit Retail Business

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,342  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of    Friday's  Wall St. Journal, Financial Times,  Investor's  News Daily, the Wall St. Journal, Financial Times,  New York Times, USA Today  yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 148840.95 up 16.44 or 0.11%   from Wednesday's close of 14824.51. For the week the Dow is up 13.3%. Of  the Dow components   19  gained and  11   declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise  was  Boeing up $1.66 and percentage-wise was Verizon up 2.71% .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Exxon down $1.57 or 1.77 %.

WSJ pC4 "Telecoms give lift to stocks" by Chris Dieterich says stocks rose following an upbeat revision to economic growth and the White House said it might strike Syria.  Verizon is charted under  Good News as it may buy Vodafone's stake in Verizon Wireless.  Exxon dropped $1.57 or 1.8% despite rising oil prices.

NYT pB9 "Stronger GDP growth and lower  job claims bolster markets" by AP says positive news on the US economy on Thursday outweighed worries about Syria.

As of the open  of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5   of   Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Friday's opening trailing P/E ratio is  15.48 up from Thursday's opening trailing P/E ratio of 15.46 (last year it was 14.41);  Friday's  opening  P/E estimate is  13.53 unchanged  from Thursday's   opening P/E estimate of 13.53  (year ago it was 12.52) and Friday's  opening dividend yield is 2.49 down   from Thursday's opening dividend yield of 2.51  (last year it was 2.64). The Dow's all-time high was 15,658.36   on August 2, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1933.53 up 3.14  from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1930.39. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $64.42 up 7 cents    from Wednesday's average of $64.35.  The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $66.76 (DIS/UNH) up 58 cents  from Wednesday's median closing price of $66.18. The lowest volume was  3M and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $314  ($193,253 - $193,039  ) .

MarketWatch 8/29/13 Thurs. 4:38 pm by Kate Gibson U.S. stocks  on Thursday climbed for a second day, denting weekly losses, as better-than-expected economic reports trumped the belief that the data increase odds that the Federal Reserve will scale back bond purchases next month.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.11% ended at 14,840.95, up 16.44 points, or 0.1%. It had initially dropped 32 points and had risen nearly 92 points. The S&P 500 index SPX +0.20% added 3.21 points, or 0.2%, to 1,638.17, with telecommunications and consumer discretionary the best performing and energy and utilities the sole laggards among its 10 major industry groups. The U.S. economy climbed at a more rapid pace in the second quarter than previously believed, with gross domestic product up 2.5% at an annual rate in the April to June period instead of the initial read of 1.7%, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Commerce.“The stock people are torn between two things. The GDP going up would normally push stocks higher, but this is the last GDP report that prints before the Fed meets again,” said Chuck Butler, president, EverBank World Markets. The price of crude retreated from the highest level in more than two years amid reports that a military strike against Syria might not be imminent. On the New York Mercantile Exchange, oil futures for October deliveryCLV3 -1.76% falling $1.30, or 1.2%, at $108.80 a barrel.“The markets have put it (Syria) on the back burner today. One of the reasons why is the prime minister of the U.K. said an immediate strike against Syria is not imminent,” said Butler, who believes crude will “eventually settle back down to the high” $90 a barrel level.Energy stocks had led the broad market higher Wednesday as the price of oil hit a two-year high above $110 on concerns over Syria.Thursday’s economic reports included the government’s count of those applying for jobless benefits, with the number falling by 6,000 to 331,000 last week, with the four-week moving average up 750 at 331,250, a level that has it near its lowest since late 2007.Shares of Verizon Communications Inc. VZ +0.18% paced blue-chip gains, up 2.7%, after Vodafone Group PLC VOD -0.47% said the companies were in negotiations over their Verizon Wireless venture. I’m thinking the bond market is finally ready for the long awaited tapering,” Elliot Spar, market strategist at Stifel, Nicolaus & Co., noted in afternoon commentary.“However, the action in the interest-sensitive sectors such as utilities, REITs [real estate investment trusts] and housing are mixed,” Spar added.
