8/13/13 Tues am JPMorgan Gets Subpoenas re: Aluminum

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,319  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal,  Financial Times,   Investor's Business Daily, New York Times & USA Today yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 15425.51 down 5.83 or 0.04%  from Friday's close of 15425.41.  For the year the Dow is up 17.7%. Of the Dow components  15 gained and   15 declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise  was  IBM up  $1.27 and percentage-wise was Caterpillar up 2.14% .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise   was  Boeing down $1.09 and percentage-wise was  Disney down 1.24%.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks straddle the line" by Alexandra Scaggs says US stocks were little changed with a dearth of economic or corporate news to provide the market with direction.  Cisco and IBM were among the top gainers in the Dow.  Cisco was up 29 cents and IBM rose $1.27.

NYT pB5 "A day for markets to trread water" by AP says corporate deals and tech stocks were ammong the few standouts on Wall st on on during a qiet day when the main market indexes ended relatively flat.

As of the open  of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6   of   Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Tuesday's  trailing P/E ratio is  16.84   unchanged from Monday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.84 (last year it was 13.87);  Tuesday's   P/E estimate is  13.92 unchanged  from Monday's   P/E estimate of 13.92  (year ago it was 12.62) and Tuesday's   dividend yield is 2.42 up   from Monday's  dividend yield of 2.42  (last year it was 2.61). The Dow's all-time high was 15,658.36   on August 2, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2007.89 down 0.75 from Friday's losing numerator of 2008.64. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $66.93 down 2 cents    from Friday's average of $66.95.  The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $68.16 (DIS/UNH) up 67 cents  from Friday's median closing price of $69.42. The lowest volume was  3M and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $75    ($200,864 - $200,789) .
