http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,330  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  as of August 21, 2013 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of August 21, 2013.

A read of the print editions of  Friday's  Wall St. Journal,  Financial Times, Investor's  News Daily, New York Times,  USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & amp; Constitution  & Daily Report (Georgia - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 14963.74 up 66.19 or 0.44%  from Wednesday's close of 14897.55.  For the year the Dow is up 14.19%. Of the Dow components   24 gained and 6 declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise was 3M up $1.25  and percentage-wise was Microsoft up 2.47% .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was   Hewlett-Packard down $3.16 or 12.45%.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks record a gain" by Tomi Kilgore, Chris Dieterich says US stocks rose with the Dow snapping its longest losing streak in over a year as investors shook off  Nasdaq trading halts due to technical issues.  Alcoa and Microsoft paced advancers.  Hewlett-Packard led decliners, after disappointing 2Q results released late Wed. & is charted under Bad News.

FT p20 "Hewlett-Packard rev decline puts brakes on S&P advance" by Jason Abbruzzese says US stocks closed higher Thurs boosted by economic data in a trading session halted by nasdaq technical woes.  Hewlett-Packard dropped 12.5% due to a decline in rev at the firm's Enterprise Group.  Microsoft was up 2.4% after Nomura Securities upgraded it from neutral to buy.

AJC pA13 "Global outlook boosts indexes" by AP says the Dow ended its longest losing streak of the year on Thur. due to encouraging economic reports from China & Europe that boosted the outlook for global growth.

IBD pB2 "Glitch cuts nasdaq hours; stocks rise in soft vol" by Paul Whitfield says the current outlook is the market is in a correction.

As of the open  of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5   of   Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Friday's opening trailing P/E ratio is  15.61 down from yesterday's opening trailing P/E ratio of 16.22 (last year it was 14.49);  today's  opening  P/E estimate is  13.66 unchanged  from Thursday's   opening P/E estimate of 13.66  (year ago it was 12.64) and today's  opening dividend yield is 2.51 up   from yesterday's opening dividend yield of 2.49  (last year it was 2.61). The Dow's all-time high was 15,658.36   on August 2, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1948.52 up  8.62 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1939.90. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $64.95 up 29 cents    from Wednesday's average of $64.66.  The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $66.81 (DIS/UNH) up 31 cents  from Wednesday's median closing price of $66.50. The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $862  ($194,852 - $193,990) .

MarketWatch 8/22/13 Thurs. 4:18 pm by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks closed higher Thursday in a low-volume session. A typical summer lull was exacerbated by a trading glitch that halted trades in Nasdaq-listed stocks across multiple exchanges for more than three hours. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.44% ended a 6-session loss streak to gain 66.19 points, or 0.4%, to 14,963.74, boosted by better European and Chinese manufacturing data and data showing continued improvement in the U.S. labor market. The S&P 500 SPX +0.86% rose 14.16 points, or 0.9%, to 1,656.96. Energy and industrials led gains across all 10 sectors. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.08% rose 38.92 points, or 1.1%, to 3,638.71, adding to gains posted before the noon-time halt.
