The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 9543.52 up 4.23 or 0.04% from Tuesday's close of 9539.29. Of the 30 Dow Companies: 18 gained and 12 declined with the biggest loser being 3M MMM $71.42 -1.26 1.73% 4,702,718 NYSE and the biggest gainer being ExxonMobil XOM $71.37 +0.69 0.98% 18,759,955 NYSE.

The current divisor for the Dow found at today's page C4 of The Wall St. Jrnl is .132319125 unchanged.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1262.79 up 0.56 from Tuesday's closing Dow numerator of 1262.23. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor.

Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today of 0.56 by the divisor you get 4.23, the increase in Wednesday's Dow close.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was 42.09 up 0.02 from Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing price of 42.07. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was 38.22 down 0.05 from Tuesday's Dow Jones median closing price of 38.27.

Dow: WSJ pC1 "Ben Bump Nudges Dow To 30.01 Gain" saying investors welcomed better than expected reading of home prices and consumer confidence, as well as Pres. Obama's nomination of Ben bernanke for a second term as chairman of the Federal Reserve, sending indexes to anothe round of hights for the year.

WSJ pC5 "Large Stock Focus- Coach and Macy's Pace Day's Gain" says stocks were lifted to new closinghighs for '09 by strong readings on home prices and consumer confidence in a trading day that was paced by the consumer sector.

NYT B7 "Shares Manage Gains on the Day" says for investors looking for stability int he financial markets and more signs of a recovery, it was easy to cheer the news on ues. The chairman of the Fed Reserve was nominated for another term, housing prices showed slender improvement,a nd consumers grew more confident.

Fin times p20 "Wall Street's bullish tone falters on oil reversal" says further signs of recovery in the US propelled equity markets, before the bullish tone faltered as a big revesal in oil prices trimmed gains for equities and boosted US Treasuries.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1262.23 up 3.97 from Monday's closing Dow numerator of 1258.26. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Fin Times p11 "Sony opens new chapter in fight for dominance of electronic books" says sony has unveiled its bid to reclaim ground lost to Amazon in the battle for control of the emerging electronic book market with a wireless, touch screen reader priced at $399. Sony has bought an undisclosed blook of minutes from AT&T, over whose 3G wireless network the book, the Daily Edition, will opeate in the US so consmers will pay no usage charges. related story at WSJ pB1 "Sony Opens New Cahpter in Rivalry With amazon Over E-Book Readers."

WSJ pB5 "Firms Racing to End Texting and Driving" says the wireless industry trade organization, CITA, says it supports banning texting while driving. CTIA's members include carreirs like AT&T and Verizon Wireless.

Accoding to an SEC brief filed int he case, the fed and Treasury were both made waware that Merrill was planning to pay more than $3 bil in bonuses in a eyar that the firm lost $27.6 bil.
