MarketWatch Thursday 12/9/10 5:47 pm by Kate Gibson says broad U.S. stock benchmarks tallied mild gains Thursday as a drop in claims for unemployment benefits bolstered sentiment, even as the dollar’s rise weighed on commodity suppliers. “There is no question that jobless claims have been going slowly in the right direction for a good two months now,” said Fred Fraenkel, vice chairman of Beacon Trust Co. Recent weeks have seen “a continuation of evidence that we have a sluggish recovery in place,” he added. The S&P 500 (SPX 1,233, +4.72, +0.38%) rose 4.72 points, or 0.4%, to 1,233, with financials up the most, while consumer discretionary and technology fell among its 10 industry groups. The Nasdaq Composite (COMP 2,617, +7.51, +0.29%) advanced 7.51 points, or 0.3%, to 2,616.67.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,370, -2.42, -0.02%) failed to muster a closing rally, however. The index ended off 2.42 points at 11,370.06, with 18 of its 30 components rising. Weighing on the blue chips, DuPont Co. (DD 48.20, -0.12, -0.25%) shares fell 1.2% after the company projected 2011 earnings that could miss Wall Street’s expectations. Conversely, Bank of America Corp. (BAC 12.64, -0.01, -0.08%) led blue-chip gains, up 5.4%. The battle between Google and Microsoft heated up Tuesday as Google unveiled its strategy for Chrome OS, including a pilot program - complete with free computers. Advancers edged past decliners on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume topped 1 billion. The government’s weekly count of those filing initial jobless claims declined by 17,000 to 421,000, better than the 425,000 level anticipated by economists polled by MarketWatch. The less-volatile four-week average fell to 427,500, its lowest in more than two years.
