The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 11,476.54 up 47.98 points or 0.42% from Monday's close of 11,428.46. Of the 30 Dow Jones component companies 19 gained, McDonald's was unchanged and 10 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM $145.82 +1.54 1.07% 4,758,044 NYSE
and percentage-wise was AT&T T $29.34 +0.56 1.95% 26,261,203 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Coke KO $63.9 -0.95 1.46% 13,808,732 NYSE
and percentage-wise was JPMorgan JPM $40.79 -0.72 1.73% 33,189,415 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.57 up from Monday's P/E of 14.55 (year ago it was 18.22); the P/E estimate is 13.34 unchanged from Monday's 13.34 (year ago it was 16.19) and the dividend yield is 2.51 unchanged from Monday's dividend yield of 2.51 (last year it was 2.64). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,516.39 up 6.34 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,510.05. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $50.55 up $0.22 from Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $50.33. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $43.87 (AXP/HPQ) down 0.15 from Monday's closing median price of $44.02. The lowest volume was United Technologies UTX $78.85 +0.70 0.9% 3,497,103 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $12.4 -0.14 1.12% 157,498,060 NYSE.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $634 ($151,639 - $151,005)

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,477, +47.98, +0.42%) rose 47.98 points, or 0.4%, to end at 11,476.54, lifted by a 1.7% gain in shares of Kraft Foods (KFT 31.39, +0.51, +1.65%) , and a 1.4% rise in shares of Microsoft Corp. (MSFT 27.68, +0.06, +0.22%) . The S&P 500 index (SPX 1,242, +1.13, +0.09%) gained 1.13 points, or 0.1%, to 1,241.59, with the telecom and health-care sectors leading the gains. The Nasdaq Composite (COMP 2,628, +2.81, +0.11%) advanced 2.81 points, or 0.1%, to 2,627.72.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,510.05 up 2.41 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,507.64. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $50.33 up $0.08 from Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $50.25. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $44.02 (HPQ/AXP) down 0.22 from Friday's closing median price of $44.44.
