Post No. 758 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 component's SEC filings.

The following are excerpts from Thursday morning's Blog.

A read of Thursday's Wall St. Journal,Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Wednesday's stock prices and related data.

Dow: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 11,362.41 up 106.63 points or 0.95% from Wednesday's close of 11,255.78. For the year the Dow is up 8.96%. Of the 30 Dow Jones component companies 26 gained and 4 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Chevron CVX $84.5 +1.80 2.18% 9,865,558 NYSE and percentage-wise was HD Home Depot $33.35 +1.74 5.5% 24,441,807 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Kraft KFT $30.425 -0.205 0.67% 9,321,531 NYSE.

WSJ pC6 "DJIA up 356.39 to start Dec" by Steven Russolillo says stocks capped their best 2 day rally since July as better than expected retail and home sales painted a brighter picture of the US economy. Alsohelping stocks, pressure on the euro eased on talk that the European Central Bank was actively buying bonds issued by some of the bloc's more fin'lly stressed govs. Bank of America and JPMorgan were among the Dow's strongest components after Goldman Sachs lifted its view on the fin'l sector to overweight, marking the first time the firm has been positive on the industry since '08. The Nat'l Assoc of Realtors' pending home sales index soared 10.4% which boosted Lowe's and Home Depot.

Fin Times p22 "Fin'ls boosted by encouraging home sales figures" by Hanah Kuchler says fin'ls surged leading US stocks higher after a surprisingly strong report onthe housing market and a sector upgrade from analysts at Goldman Sachs.

NYT pB9 'Retails ales & real estate help shares climb for 2nd day" by Chris Hauser says stocks rose for a 2nd day lifted by encouraging reports on retail sales and the real estate market. Developments in Europe, where the central bank took steps to support bond markets, also helped, lifting fin'l companies in particular.

USA Today p4B "Strong home sales propel stock gains" by Bloomberg says stocks advanced again Thurs as purchases of existing homes unexpectedly jumped, retail sales beat estimates and Goldman Sachs recommended buying fin'l sahres.

As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.49 up from Thursday's P/E of 14.35 (year ago it was 17.98); the P/E estimate is 12.95 unchanged from Thursday's 12.95 (year ago it was 16.17) and the dividend yield is 2.52 down from Thursday's dividend yield of (last year it was 2.67). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,501.31 up 14.09 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1487.22. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $50.04 up $0.47 from Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $49.57. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $43.07 (HPQ/AXP) up 0.49 from Wednesday's closing median price of $42.58. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $86.51 +0.46 0.53% 4,065,724 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $11.67 +0.38 3.37% 261,157,850 NYSE.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,398 ($150,120 - $148,722)

MarketWatch Thursday 12/2/10 4:53 pm by Kate Gibson says stocks rallied for a second straight day Thursday, with assurances of support from the European Central Bank helping ease investor concerns over the region’s debt, while upbeat U.S. reports on retail and home sales lifted investor sentiment. “A lot of consumers are experiencing recession fatigue for having denied themselves,” Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at S&P Equity Research, said of positive sales data from retailers including Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (ANF 56.00, -0.02, -0.04%) and Target Corp. (TGT 59.90, +0.25, +0.42%). Better-than-expected economic reports from the U.S. and overseas in recent days have added “credence to bottom-up earnings forecasts previously viewed as too optimistic,” said Stovall.
Posting its first back-to-back sessions of triple-digit gains since late July, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,362, +106.63, +0.95%) gained 106.63 points, or 1%, to 11,362.41, with 27 of its 30 components rising, led by home-improvement retailer Home Depot Inc. (HD 33.36, +1.75, +5.54%), up 5.5%. The S&P 500 (SPX 1,222, +15.46, +1.28%) gained 15.46 points, or 1.3%, to 1,221.53, with financial companies pacing gains among its 10 industry groups. The Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP 2,579, +29.92, +1.17%) added 29.92 points, or 1.2%, to 2,579.35. For every stock that was declining, nearly three stocks gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume topped 1.1 billion shares. Before the opening bell, the government had reported that initial jobless claims increased by 26,000 to 436,000 last week, while the four-week average declined to a two-year low of 431,000. “Claims did rise, but the overall trend is still showing a bit of improvement. Even though unemployment remains above 9%, at least it’s not getting worse,” said Stovall of S&P, which is forecasting that the Labor Department will report the addition of 165,000 jobs in November, about 15,000 greater than the Wall Street consensus. Providing extra support to stocks, the National Association of Realtors said its pending-home-sales index climbed 10.4% in October, with the trade group’s chief economist saying an improving labor market is giving a lift to the housing industry, which was described as in a “recovery phase.” In Europe, ECB President Jean-Claude Trichet said the central bank would keep offering banks unfettered access to loans through the first quarter, helping to allay worries that Europe’s sovereign-debt troubles would deepen. The comments, and word that the ECB was in the market buying peripheral euro-zone debt Thursday, helped lift the euro against the dollar. The euro (EURUSD 1.3210, -0.0013, -0.0983%) bought $1.3218, up from $1.3129 late Wednesday. The dollar index /(DXY 80.25, -0.46, -0.57%) fell to 80.21 from 80.734. U.S.-listed shares of Wimm-Bill-Dann Foods (WBD 31.30, +6.80, +27.76%) surged 28% after PepsiCo Inc. (PEP 65.18, -0.02, -0.03%) said it would buy a majority stake in the Russian company for $3.8 billion.
