MarketWatch Thursday 12/1/10 4:53 pm by Kate Gibson says stocks rallied for a second straight day Thursday, with assurances of support from the European Central Bank helping ease investor concerns over the region’s debt, while upbeat U.S. reports on retail and home sales lifted investor sentiment. “A lot of consumers are experiencing recession fatigue for having denied themselves,” Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at S&P Equity Research, said of positive sales data from retailers including Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (ANF 56.00, -0.02, -0.04%) and Target Corp. (TGT 59.90, +0.25, +0.42%). Better-than-expected economic reports from the U.S. and overseas in recent days have added “credence to bottom-up earnings forecasts previously viewed as too optimistic,” said Stovall.
Posting its first back-to-back sessions of triple-digit gains since late July, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,362, +106.63, +0.95%) gained 106.63 points, or 1%, to 11,362.41, with 27 of its 30 components rising, led by home-improvement retailer Home Depot Inc. (HD 33.36, +1.75, +5.54%), up 5.5%. The S&P 500 (SPX 1,222, +15.46, +1.28%) gained 15.46 points, or 1.3%, to 1,221.53, with financial companies pacing gains among its 10 industry groups. The Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP 2,579, +29.92, +1.17%) added 29.92 points, or 1.2%, to 2,579.35. For every stock that was declining, nearly three stocks gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume topped 1.1 billion shares. Before the opening bell, the government had reported that initial jobless claims increased by 26,000 to 436,000 last week, while the four-week average declined to a two-year low of 431,000. “Claims did rise, but the overall trend is still showing a bit of improvement. Even though unemployment remains above 9%, at least it’s not getting worse,” said Stovall of S&P, which is forecasting that the Labor Department will report the addition of 165,000 jobs in November, about 15,000 greater than the Wall Street consensus. Providing extra support to stocks, the National Association of Realtors said its pending-home-sales index climbed 10.4% in October, with the trade group’s chief economist saying an improving labor market is giving a lift to the housing industry, which was described as in a “recovery phase.” In Europe, ECB President Jean-Claude Trichet said the central bank would keep offering banks unfettered access to loans through the first quarter, helping to allay worries that Europe’s sovereign-debt troubles would deepen. The comments, and word that the ECB was in the market buying peripheral euro-zone debt Thursday, helped lift the euro against the dollar. The euro (EURUSD 1.3210, -0.0013, -0.0983%) bought $1.3218, up from $1.3129 late Wednesday. The dollar index /(DXY 80.25, -0.46, -0.57%) fell to 80.21 from 80.734. U.S.-listed shares of Wimm-Bill-Dann Foods (WBD 31.30, +6.80, +27.76%) surged 28% after PepsiCo Inc. (PEP 65.18, -0.02, -0.03%) said it would buy a majority stake in the Russian company for $3.8 billion.
