Post No. 767 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of Dec. 7, 2010 and recent Dow 30 component's SEC filings.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 11,372.48 up 13.32 points or 0.12% from Tuesday's close of 11,359.16. Of the 30 Dow Jones component companies 19 gained and 11 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM $144.98 +0.96 0.67% 4,959,315 NYSE and percentage-wise was Pfizer PFE $16.72 -0.05 0.3% 42,838,066 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was McDonald's MCD $78.74 -1.60 1.99% 9,335,596 NYSE.
As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.48 down from Tuesday's P/E of 14.49 (year ago it was 17.84); the P/E estimate is 13.33 unchanged from Tuesday's 13.33 (year ago it was 16.05) and the dividend yield is 2.52 unchanged from Tuesday's dividend yield of 2.52 (last year it was 2.69). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,502.64 up 1.76 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1500.88. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $50.09 up $0.06 from Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $50.03. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $44.15 (HPQ/AXP) up 0.66 from Tuesday's closing median price of $43.49. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $55.06 +0.22 0.4% 3,651,808 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $12 0.43 +3.72% 233,864,264 NYSE.
If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $176 ($150,264 - 150,088)
MarketWatch Wednesday 12/8/10 4:51 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stock closed slightly higher Wednesday, as a rally in financial stocks and hopes over the impact of tax cuts offset concerns about the deficit and a sell-off in government bonds. The move higher came in a late turnaround after the market stood close to a standstill for most of the session. “After the big announcement on the supposed tax deal — well, it doesn’t seem like it’s all that done yet — and then you have people coming at both sides with an issue,” said Jay Suskind, senior vice president at Duncan-Williams of the divergent views being expressed in the equities and bond markets. “It adds a little more uncertainty into the mix,” Suskind added. But shortly before the close, financials helped lift the major benchmarks into positive ground. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,372, +13.32, +0.12%) rose 13.32 points, or 0.1%, to end at 11,372.48, lifted by shares of Bank of America (BAC 12.04, +0.04, +0.33%) , up 3.7%, and JP Morgan Chase (JPM 40.27, +0.01, +0.03%) , up 2.6%.Shares of Home Depot Inc., (HD 33.98, -0.05, -0.14%) rose 1.4% after the home-improvement retailer hiked its earnings outlook for the second time in two months. The S&P 500 Index (SPX 1,228, +4.53, +0.37%) rose 4.53 points, or 0.4%, to 1,228.28. The Nasdaq Composite (COMP 2,609, +10.67, +0.41%) gained 10.67 points, or 0.4%, to 2,609.16.His ability to resurrect the stock, reinvigorate sales, jolt the instant-coffee market, and reorient a wayward business that had become a caricature of its former self made Howard Schultz a finalist for MarketWatch's CEO of the Decade honors. For every two stock rising, nearly three fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where 1.1 billion shares exchanged hands. The dollar’s rise on Wednesday helped dent dollar-denominated assets, including gold futures, which fell 1.8% to end at $1,383.20 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange.Oil futures declined after inventory data, with crude down 41 cents to $88.28 a barrel on Nymex.
Provisions of the tax deal, which must still be worked into specific legislation, would allow immediate write-offs of capital investments and “would be very favorable to industrial-equipment makers and immediately drive economic growth,” Fred Dickson, chief investment strategist at Davidson Companies, wrote in a note.
The compromise on taxes is also expected to add to the budget deficit. That concern helped to push the price of U.S. debt down, bringing 10-year note yields, used in determining consumer borrowing costs, to their highest level since June.
On the corporate front, Fortune Brands Inc. (FO 61.76, +0.61, +1.00%) shares rose 1% after the company said it would separate into three pieces, retaining its liquor business and shedding businesses that make products such as locks and golf balls.

The following are excerpts from Wed morning's Blog.
A read of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data.
Dow:s on Tuesday finished near neutral as healthy gains that came with a deal to extend tax cuts lost their steam as the dollar gained, hitting equities and other dollar-denominated assets. Shedding a rise of more than 70 points, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,359, -3.03, -0.03%) ended at 11,359.16, down 3.03 points. The S&P 500 (SPX 1,224, +0.63, +0.05%) finished fractionally higher at 1,223.75, while the Nasdaq Composite (COMP 2,598, +3.57, +0.14%) gained 3.57 points to 2,598.49.
