Post No. 1,097 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of June 20, 2011 and Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of June 20, 2011.

A read of the print editions of Friday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today & Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Thursday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 12,414.34 up 152.92 or 1.25% from Wednesday's close of 12,261.42. For the year the Dow is up 7.23%. Of the 30 Dow components 24 gained and 6 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Caterpillar CAT $106.53 +3.17 3.07% 9,587,596 NYSE and percentage-wise was Intel INTC $22.16 +0.77 3.6% 53,202,702 NASDAQ-GS. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was McDonald's MCD $84.35 -0.22 0.26% 4,036,663 NYSE and percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $10.959 -0.181 1.62% 240,713,724 NYSE.

WSJ pC9 "blue chips end June with a win" by Brendan Conway says US stocks surged for a 4th day in a row to give a strong close to 2Q, amid encouraging Chicago area economic data & a pledge from German banks to support heavily indebted Greece. Intel, charted under Good News, led the Dow, rising 77 cents as a surge in the Philadelphia Stock Exchange semiconductor index pushed up many techs. Caterpillar jumped 3.10. Bank of America was the Dow's worst performer dropping 18 cents and is charted under Bad News as investors took a second look at the $8.5 bil settlement.

Fin Times p22 "Strong gains for tech sector as positive economic data lift spirits" by Michael Stothard says Wall St concluded the final session of a mostly depressed & volatile quarter on a positve note as upbeat economic data lifted sentiment & investors began to position themselves long in anticipation of a healthy forthcoming earnings session.

NYT pB7 "Dow gains 153 pints to end the quarter higher" by Christine Hauser says stock prices rose sharply as easing concerns over European debt troubles & economic growth in the US helped the Dow end the 2nd quarter with a modest gain.

USA Today p6B "Stocks end June with gains on optimistic news from Greece" by Bloomberg says stocks rallied giving the S&P 500 its biggest 4 day gain since Sept amid increased optimism that Greece will avoid default & improved American business activity.

As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Friday's trailing P/E is 14.12 up from yesterday's trailing P/E of 13.95 (year ago it was 14.15); today's P/E estimate is 12.20 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.20 (year ago it was 12.60), and Friday's dividend yield is 2.41 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.44 (last year it was 2.85). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,640.30 up 19.36 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,620.94. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.68 up 0.65 from Wednesday's average closing price of $54.03. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $46.33 (AXP/JPM) up 0.65 from Wednesday's median closing price of $45.68. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $58.38 -0.19 0.32% 3,522,126 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $10.959 -0.181 1.62% 240,713,724 NYSE.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $2,982 ($164,030 - $161,048).

MarketWatch Thursday 6/30/11 4:17 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks on Thursday rallied for a fourth day, lifting the Dow Jones Industrial Average to its fourth consecutive quarterly gain. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 152.92 points, or 1.3%, to 12,414.34, leaving the blue-chip index up 0.8% for the second quarter and off 1.2% for June. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index rose 13.23 points, or 1%, to 1,320.64, down 0.4% for the just-ended quarter and off 1.8% for the month. The Nasdaq Composite Index climbed 33.03 points, or 1.2%, to 2,773.52, off 0.3% for the quarter and off 2.2% for June.
