Post No. 1,105 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of June 20, 2011 and Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of June 20, 2011.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 12,626.02 up 56.15 or 0.45% from Tuesday's close of 12,569.97. Of the 30 Dow components 17 gained, United Technologies was unchanged and 12 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Caterpillar CAT $110.08 +1.65 1.52% 6,920,671 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was JPMorgan JPM $40.56 -0.47 1.15% 23,731,848 NYSE and percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $10.74 -0.26 2.36% 142,612,751 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Wednesday's trailing P/E is 14.30 down from Tuesday's trailing P/E of 14.32 (year ago it was 14.15); Wednesday's P/E estimate is 12.54 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 12.54 (year ago it was 11.95), and Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.40 up from Tuesday's dividend yield of 2.39 (last year it was 2.85). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,668.26 up 7.41 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,660.85. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.61 up 0.25 from Tuesday's average closing price of $55.36. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $46.66 (AXP/JPM) down 0.03 from Tuesday's median closing price of $46.69. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $58.61 +0.08 0.14% 2,750,642 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $10.74 -0.26 2.36% 142,612,751 NYSE.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $741 (166826 - $166,085).

MarketWatch Wednesday 7/6/11 4:42 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks closed higher Wednesday on low volume as Wall Street looked beyond a weak reading on the U.S. services sector and overseas debt issues and interest-rate hikes. “The market seems to be bouncing in an upward direction now. We’re still in a bull market, but there are some head winds,” said Stuart Freeman, chief equity strategist at Wells Fargo Advisors. The end of the Federal Reserve’s massive bond-buying purchases, along with the price of oil, were among the head winds Freeman cited. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 56.15 points, or 0.5%, at 12,626.02, with 19 of its 30 components rising. On Tuesday, the blue-chip index lost 12.9 points, or 0.1%, for its first drop in six consecutive sessions. With Greece's fate still uncertain and the U.S. struggling to raise its debt ceiling, investors have lots to worry about, and lots to profit from in July.
“We had a pullback, so investors are buying stocks that came off 8% or pulled back,” said Freeman of the retreat that preceded last week’s winning stretch. “Buying the dip is back in vogue. The overseas debt issues and the slightly weaker than expected ISM services index brought the averages down but they didn’t stay down,” said Elliot Spar, market strategist at Stifel, Nicolaus & Co. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index rose 1.34 points, or 0.1%, to close at 1,339.22, with consumer staples faring best and telecommunications performing the worst among its 10 industry groups. “The market feels like it wants to work its way higher but there are enough negatives, technical and macro, that I expect the S&P to stay capped by the high at 1,371,” offered Spar at Stifel, Nicolaus.
The Nasdaq Composite Index advanced 8.25 points to close at 2,834.02.
Advancers just outpaced decliners on the New York Stock Exchange, where only 821 million shares had traded by the close. Crude-oil futures finished at $96.65 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gold futures ended at a two-week high of $1,529.20 an ounce on the Comex division of Nymex. The Institute for Supply Management on Wednesday said its services-sector index fell to 53.3 in June from 54.6 in May, while China’s central bank hiked interest rates for a third time this year. Late Tuesday, Moody’s Investors Service cut Portugal’s credit rating to junk, with the move coming ahead of a much-anticipated European Central Bank interest-rate decision due Thursday. On Thursday, the government’s weekly unemployment claims data are due out, along with the ADP National Employment Report on private-sector jobs, with both coming ahead of the monthly nonfarm payrolls report on Friday.
