Post No. 1,110 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of July 7, 2011.
Your Blogger is in Singapore lecturing, among other things, on the Dow Jones 30 Components at the Clean Technology World Asia Conference. I apologize for the sporadic postings through July 17 and lack of access to my usual print publications to which this Blog is dedicated.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 12,505.76 down 151.44 or 1.20% from Friday's close of 12,719.49. Of the 30 Dow components all 30 declined. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Caterpillar CAT $108.16 -2.25 2.04% 7,568,751 NYSE and percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $10.35 -0.35 3.27% 145,246,332 NYSE.
As of the open of the market Monday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,652.38 down 20.01 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,672.39. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.08 down 0.67 from Friday's average closing price of $55.75. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $45.85 (AXP/JPM) down 1.06 from Friday's median closing price of $46.91. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $58.25 -0.41 0.7% 3,544,706 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $10.35 -0.35 3.27% 145,246,332 NYSE.
If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $2,001 ($167,239 - $165,238).
MarketWatch Monday 7/11/11 4:37 pm by Wallace Witkowsi & Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks closed down Monday as surging benchmark yields in Italy, pinned to the prospects of a Greek debt default, deepened worries that Europe’s sovereign-debt crisis is worsening. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 151.44 points, or 1.2%, to close at 12,505.76. Banks, which are seen as vulnerable to a European fiscal default because of exposure to bank debt, were hit the hardest. Tom Wald, portfolio manager of Tactical Allocation Group, said the selloff came in response to late June’s market ramp-up, when it appeared a temporary fix for Greece was in place, compounded by last week’s disappointing U.S. jobs data. Banks are being hard hit because of uncertainty surrounding their exposure to the worsening European debt crisis with the addition of Italy into the spotlight. “Any time you have unknowns on the balance sheets of financial institutions, that’s bad,” Wald said. “You know there are derivatives and [credit default swaps] out there, and the market hates that uncertainty.” Bank of America Corp. shares lost 3.3%, leading all decliners among the 30 Dow components, all of which finished the day down. J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. fell 3.2%. Alcoa Inc., which closed down 2.9%, kicked off second-quarter earnings season after the closing bell by reporting an adjusted profit of 32 cents a share, just shy of the Wall Street estimate of 33 cents a share. Yields on 10-year Italian government bonds surged 45 basis points to 5.64%. Investors dumped the debt of cash-strapped euro-zone governments on fear that European officials would allow Greece to default on some of its bonds as part of a new bailout plan. Spanish government-bond yields also surged, and the euro slid more than 1%, recently trading at $1.4029 versus $1.4247 Friday. “It’s bigger than Italy,” said Michael Jones, chief investment officer of Riverfront Investment Group. “They’re just the latest symptom of the ineffective response of Europe’s policy makers.” He added that problems in Italy are just beginning to catch up to those in such countries as Greece and Portugal. Efforts to get banks to voluntarily roll over Greece’s debt appear to be falling apart because ratings agencies will consider lower interest rates on the restructured debt as a technical default, noted Jones. This, in turn, would prevent the European Central Bank from holding Greek bonds as collateral under its own rules, he said. One hopeful potential outcome — and a “politically poisonous” one, according to Jones — would see Greek debt being bought at a discount and written down, with the loss spread among European taxpayers. The S&P 500 fell 24.31 points, or 1.8%, to close at 1,319.49, with a selloff of 2.8% in financial stocks leading all 10 index subsectors lower. The Nasdaq Composite lost 57.19 points, or 2%, to close at 2,802.62. On the New York Stock Exchange, declining stocks outnumbered rising ones about 6 to 1 on light volume of 829.4 million shares as of the market close. Lingering disappointment over Friday’s jobs report, which showed a much-smaller-than-expected expansion in U.S. nonfarm payrolls, and an impasse in talks between congressional leaders and President Obama on U.S. borrowing levels also weighed on the markets. Oil futures settled lower by $1.05, or 1.1%, at $95.15 a barrel, while gold futures closed up $7.60 at $1,549.20 an ounce.

MarketWatch Friday 7/8/11 4:48 pm by Steven Russolillo says U.S. stocks
closed lower Friday for just the second time in two weeks as a disappointing monthly jobs report prompted investors to dial back recent optimism about the economic recovery. The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished down 62.29 points, or 0.49%, to 12,657.20, its biggest loss since June 24. The blue-chip index pared losses during the final hour of trading; it fell as much as 152 points earlier in the session. Bank of America Corp. led the Dow lower, dropping 2%, while General Electric Co. declined 1.6%. The Standard & Poor’s 500-stock shed 9.42 points, or 0.70%, to 1,343.80, as financials, industrials and energy stocks struggled. All 10 of the S&P 500 sectors closed in negative territory. There's no silver lining in the June jobs report, but economists still aren’t giving up on signals of a turnaround. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite fell 12.85 points, or 0.45%, to 2,859.81. Stocks tumbled from the opening bell after the Labor Department reported nonfarm payrolls rose 18,000 last month, a fraction of what was expected. Small gains in the private sector were just enough to outweigh continued government job losses. The jobless rate, which is obtained from a separate household survey, increased for a third straight month to 9.2% in June, the highest since December 2010. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had forecast that payrolls would rise by 125,000 and that June’s jobless rate would remain steady at 9.1%. The tone was further dampened by comments from President Barack Obama following the jobs report. He acknowledged that the employment data confirm policy makers have a “big hole” to fill on stimulating job growth. “It was obviously a shock, although in retrospect, I don’t think we should be inordinately surprised by the report considering the weakness in the second quarter,” said Bruce McCain, chief investment strategist at Key Private Bank. “Investors got their hopes up too far, too fast, and we’re paying the price in disappointment.” Ahead of the report, investor optimism had zoomed higher over the past two weeks on improving manufacturing news and retail-sales data as well as a big jump in private-sector employment as measured by Automatic Data Processing. Prior to Friday’s open, the Dow industrials were within 100 points of their three-year closing high, reached in late April. Friday’s declines showed “people were looking for an excuse to sell,” said Brian Perry, co-portfolio manager at Hennessy Funds. “The jobs report gave it to them. It’s the glass half-empty approach. People are looking for a reason to take profits.” Nevertheless, a mindset remains that investor sentiment will turn more optimistic as corporate earnings reports start trickling in. Dow component Alcoa Inc. kicks off second-quarter earnings season after the market close on Monday. Earnings have underpinned the market’s bull run of the past two years and bullish investors are looking for even stronger results to power the stocks back toward the late-April highs.
“I don’t necessarily believe this recent rally is over,” said Robert Pavlik, chief market strategist at Banyan Partners. “[Friday’s] action is all about jobs. But if we get some better-than-expected earnings and some decent guidance next week, it will quickly redirect the market’s attention away from this weak employment report.” Crude-oil futures fell 2.5% to finish at $96.20 a barrel, while gold futures rose $11 to $1,541.60 an ounce. The U.S. dollar rose against the euro but fell against the yen. Safe-haven Treasurys surged. Shares of staffing companies slumped after the weak jobs report, adding to concerns the labor market will take years to recover. Monster Worldwide fell 3.2% and ManpowerGroup dropped 4.3%. On Assignment declined 3.4% and Robert Half International fell 4%.
Google Inc. shares fell 2.7% after Morgan Stanley cut its stock investment rating and price target for the Internet search giant due to concerns around elevated spending, a lack of meaningful near-term catalysts and uncertainty regarding the payoff of recent investments.

MarketWatch Wednesday 7/6/11 4:42 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks closed higher Wednesday on low volume as Wall Street looked beyond a weak reading on the U.S. services sector and overseas debt issues and interest-rate hikes. “The market seems to be bouncing in an upward direction now. We’re still in a bull market, but there are some head winds,” said Stuart Freeman, chief equity strategist at Wells Fargo Advisors. The end of the Federal Reserve’s massive bond-buying purchases, along with the price of oil, were among the head winds Freeman cited. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 56.15 points, or 0.5%, at 12,626.02, with 19 of its 30 components rising. On Tuesday, the blue-chip index lost 12.9 points, or 0.1%, for its first drop in six consecutive sessions. With Greece's fate still uncertain and the U.S. struggling to raise its debt ceiling, investors have lots to worry about, and lots to profit from in July. “We had a pullback, so investors are buying stocks that came off 8% or pulled back,” said Freeman of the retreat that preceded last week’s winning stretch. “Buying the dip is back in vogue. The overseas debt issues and the slightly weaker than expected ISM services index brought the averages down but they didn’t stay down,” said Elliot Spar, market strategist at Stifel, Nicolaus & Co. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index rose 1.34 points, or 0.1%, to close at 1,339.22, with consumer staples faring best and telecommunications performing the worst among its 10 industry groups. “The market feels like it wants to work its way higher but there are enough negatives, technical and macro, that I expect the S&P to stay capped by the high at 1,371,” offered Spar at Stifel, Nicolaus. The Nasdaq Composite Index advanced 8.25 points to close at 2,834.02. Advancers just outpaced decliners on the New York Stock Exchange, where only 821 million shares had traded by the close. Crude-oil futures finished at $96.65 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gold futures ended at a two-week high of $1,529.20 an ounce on the Comex division of Nymex. The Institute for Supply Management on Wednesday said its services-sector index fell to 53.3 in June from 54.6 in May, while China’s central bank hiked interest rates for a third time this year. Late Tuesday, Moody’s Investors Service cut Portugal’s credit rating to junk, with the move coming ahead of a much-anticipated European Central Bank interest-rate decision due Thursday. On Thursday, the government’s weekly unemployment claims data are due out, along with the ADP National Employment Report on private-sector jobs, with both coming ahead of the monthly nonfarm payrolls report on Friday.
