The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 12,571.91 down 15.51 or 0.12% from Tuesday's close of 12,587.42. Of the 30 Dow components 13 gained, Kraft was unchanged and 16 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Boeing BA $72.07 +1.54 2.18% 7,943,297 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was United Technologies UTX $87.22 -1.60 1.8% 6,179,097 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.23 up from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.05 (year ago it was 14.52); today's P/E estimate is 12.60 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.60 (year ago it was 12.49), and today's dividend yield is 2.40 down from Tuesday's dividend yield of 2.44 (last year it was 2.72). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,661.12 down 2.05 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,663.17. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.37 down 0.06 from Tuesday's average closing price of $55.43. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $46.53 (AXP/JPM) up 0.43 from Tuesday's median closing price of $46.10. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $94.25 -0.02 0.02% 2,783,295 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $9.85 +0.28 2.93% 245,841,145 NYSE.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $207 ($166,317 - $166,110).

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 15.51 points, or 0.1%, to close at 12,571.91 after scoring its best session of the year on Tuesday. Shares of United Technologies Corp. led the decliners, down 1.8%. The S&P 500 fell 0.89 point, or 0.07%, to end at 1,325.84 and the Nasdaq Composite closed at 2,814.23, down 12.29 points, or 0.4%.

USA Today p1B "Stocks see year's biggest jump" by Adam Shell says stocks posted their biggest gains of the year Tues amid strong profit reports from Coke & IBM and renewed hopes that US lawmakers would be able to break their stalemate and strike a deficit reduction deal to avert a gov default.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,663.17 up 26.73 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,636.44. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.44 up 0.89 from Monday's average closing price of $54.55. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $46.10 (AXP/JPM) up 0.52 from Monday's median closing price of $45.58. MarketWatch Tuesday 7/19/11 4:15 pm by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks closed near their highs of the day Tuesday, driving the Dow average to its best performance of the year, after surprisingly strong results and forecast from International Business Machines Corp. and progress from U.S. lawmakers on borrowing limits. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 202.26 points, or 1.6%, to 12,587.42. The price-weighted index was boosted by a $9.93, or 5.7% rise, in IBM's stock. Microsoft Corp. shares jumped 3.6%. Tech stocks also lifted the Nasdaq Composite. Its gain of 61.41 points, or 2.2%, to 2,826.52 was its best day since October. The S&P 500 ended up 21.29 points, or 1.6%, to 1,326.73.
