Post No. 1,127 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of July 7, 2011.
A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's the combined issues each of of Saturday/Sunday's Wall St. Journal & Financial Times & Sunday's & Saturday's New York Times & Atlanta Journal Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Wednesday's stock prices and related data.
Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 12,681.86 down 43.25 or 0.34% from Thursday's close of 12,724.411. For the week the Dow was up 1.6%. For the year the Dow is up 9.53%. Of the 30 Dow components 13 gained and 17 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was McDonald's MCD $88.56 +2.02 2.33% 11,410,069 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Caterpillar CAT $105.15 -6.45 5.78% 25,775,680 NYSE.
WSJ pB5 "Up week ends on a downer" by Jonathan Cheng says stocks lipped on Fri but still notched a strong weekly advance as investors weighed Caterpillar's disappointing results against a new agreement on a Greek financing plan. Microsoft added 44 cents after sales of its Windows perating system declined, though earnings topped estimates, rising 30%.
As of the close of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B4 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Monday's closing trailing P/E ratio is 14.69 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.53 (year ago it was 14.51); Monday's P/E estimate is 12.75 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.60 (year ago it was 12.59), and Monday's dividend yield is 2.38 unchanged from Friday's dividend yield of 2.38 (last year it was 2.70). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,675.55 down 5.71 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,681.26. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for Friday by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in Friday's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.85 down 0.81 from Thursday's average closing price of $56.04. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $47.22 (AXP/JPM) down 0.22 from Thursday's median closing price of $47.44. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $95.38 -0.46 0.48% 2,846,219 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $10.13 -0.10 0.98% 138,456,149 NYSE.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $576 ($168,126 - $167,550).
MarketWatch Friday 7/22/11 5:07 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks closed Friday’s session with more than 1% weekly gains as robust results from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. highlighted a generally strong streak of earnings reports. “In general this has been a week of positive earnings announcements, we’ve started to change investor focus from the slowdown of the second quarter to the anticipated acceleration of growth in the third and fourth quarters,” said Ken Tower, senior analyst at Quantitative Analysis Service. “Prospects for an agreement on the budget and removing uncertainty over the debt ceiling” also lifted equities in recent days, said Tower, who added that it “seems as though discussions continue in the background even when the headline news is not so good.” The Dow Transports are lagging the Dow Jones Industrial Average, a potentially bearish sign for stocks since the transportation index is often viewed as a leading indicator, according to MarketWatch columnist Mark Hulbert. Friday’s low-volume session also included some upsets. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.34% ended down 43.25 points, or 0.3%, to 12,681.16. Component and equipment maker Caterpillar CAT -5.78% led losses for 17 of the index’s 30 components with a drop of 5.8%, to $105.15. The Dow, which is a price-weighted index, is most sensitive to moves in its high-priced stocks.
“Caterpillar and several smaller companies delivered earnings that missed estimates, balancing out the list of positive surprises,” according to Fred Dickson, chief investment strategist at Davidson Cos. McDonald Corp. MCD +2.33% shares led Dow advancers with a 2.3% gain after the hamburger seller reported better-than-expected profit for the second quarter, on robust sales in the United States and Europe.
For the week, the Dow gained 1.6%. The S&P 500 Index SPX +0.09% gained 1.22 points, or 0.1%, to 1,345.02 on Friday. For the week, it gained 2.2%. Technology companies fared the best among the index’s 10 industry groups, with Advanced Micro Devices AMD +19.23% up 19% after the maker of processors used in personal computers projected third-quarter sales that beat market expectations. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP +0.86% added 24.4 points, or 0.9%, to 2,858.83. It gained 2.5% for the week. For every 14 stocks gaining 15 declined on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume topped 738 million. Crude-oil futures CL1U +0.69% closed up 0.8% at $99.87 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, while gold futures GC1Q +0.79% added $14.50 to $1,601.5 an ounce. Equities had climbed sharply on Thursday as European officials brokered new aid for Greece, while closer to home, negotiations to raise the debt limit and avert a U.S. default have so far failed to yield an agreement in Washington. “I would suggest it is going to be a hot weekend here in Washington,” Speaker John Boehner (R., Ohio) told reporters on Friday following a meeting of House Republicans.
