Post No. 1,717 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of Tuesday's  Wall St. Journal &Financial Times,  Investor's Business Daily,  New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Monday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Average The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 12,736.29 down 36.18 or 0.28% from Friday's close of 12,772.47 . For the year the Dow is up 4.25%. Of the 30 Dow components 14 gained and 16 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Merck up 63 cents or 1.52% . The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM down $1.76 and percentage-wise was DuPont down 2.92%.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks notch 3rd straight decline" by Matt Jarzemsky says nervousness re: Europe's debt crisis, economic slowdown in China nad the onset of domestic earnings season pushed US stocks lower.  Acloa's earnings report after the market's close kicked off the reporting session, which topped analysts estimates.

USA Today p4B "stocks slip on earnings fears, but Alcoa tops expectations" by Bloomberg says US stocks fell Mon giving benchmark indexes the longest slump in more than a month, after a jump in Spanish bond yields above 7% intensified concern about Euruope's crisis and investors awaited Alcoa's results.

NYT pB3 "Market droops as investors await earnings reports" by AP says anxious investors sent stocks modestly lower on Mon ahead of corp earnings reports and amid more signs of instability in Europe.  alcoa's results are often seen as a harbinger for other major firms.  Investor expectations are low.

IBD pB2 "Stocks trim some losses; NYSE suffers distribution" by Vincent Mao says stocks started off the week on a down note but trimmed the bulk of their losses to close modestly lower Mon.  The current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

Fin Times p22 "Amerigroup leaps as WellPoint confirms $4.9 bn takeover deal" by Kandy Wong says among the 10 S&P sectors, only the healtcare and telecom indices trades in positive territory.  US equities pointed lower as the impact of the slowing global economy on corp earnings cauth the attention of investors.  Alcoa closed .4% higher before it posted 2Q earnings that just beat analysts' estimates.  DuPont fell 2.9%.  Exxon decreaed 1.4%.

As of the open of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.03 down from Monday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.07 (year ago it was 14.23); today's P/E estimate is 12.15 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 12.15  (year ago it was 12.76) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.63 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.62 (last year it was 2.37). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,682.84 down 4.78 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,687.62. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.09 down 0.16 from Friday's average closing price of $56.25. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $50.06 (HD/DIS) down $0.47 from Friday's median closing price of $50.53 (HD/DD). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $478 ($168,750 - $168,270).

MarketWatch Mon. 3:51 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks on Monday lost ground for a third session after Spanish bond yields rose to levels viewed as unsustainable and ahead of earnings from Alcoa Inc.The aluminum maker’s quarterly results mark the unofficial start of reporting for U.S. company earnings. But the second-quarter earnings season actually started a few weeks ago when AutoZone Inc. AZO+0.74% reported. The 25 S&P 500 companies to release results so far offer a “good proxy for the other 475 companies,” said Nick Raich, director of research at Key Private Bank in Cleveland. “What we’re seeing is rates of growth are slowing to about 9%. Those same companies reported 15% growth last quarter, so that’s a significant slowing of growth,” he said. Of the 25 companies that have reported second-quarter results, 72% have lowered third-quarter estimates, compared with 44% that reduced expectations after reporting first-quarter results, Raich added. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA-0.28% fell 45.79 points, or 0.4%, at 12,726.68, with aviation manufacturer Boeing Co. BA +0.46% , among the 13 blue-chip companies rising, up 0.4% after sealing a $7.2 billion deal with aircraft-leasing firm Air Lease Corp. AL -0.36% Alcoa AA +0.40% reports second-quarter results after the close, with the Dow component expected to report a drop in earnings with global production exceeding demand, keeping a lid on metal prices. On Friday, Dow component J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.JPM+0.18% reports, with Chief Executive Jamie Dimon offering his best guess as to how much the bank lost in bad trades. The S&P 500 Index SPX-0.16% declined 3.28 points, or 0.3%, at 1,351.40, with energy hardest hit and health care the best performing of its 10 industry groups. Shares of Visa Inc. V -1.30% and MasterCard Inc.MA -2.35% fell after UBS AG downgraded the payment networks. Amerigroup Corp.AGP+38.00% rallied 38% after WellPoint Inc. WLP+3.41% said it would acquire the managed health-care company for $4.9 billion in cash. Apple Inc. AAPL+1.32% stock climbed 1% after a Piper Jaffray analyst said the technology company could sell as many as 6 million iPad tablets in the fourth quarter. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP-0.19% shed 11.54 points, or 0.4%, at 2,925.81. For every two stocks advancing, three fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where 396 million shares traded as of 3:25 p.m. Eastern time. The price of oil rose as a labor dispute threatened to stop production in Norway, with crude futures for August delivery CLQ2+1.48% climbing $1.54 to end at $85.99 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gold futures GCQ2+0.56% finished the floor session at $1,589.10 an ounce, up $10.20, or 0.7%.Treasury prices rose, with the yield on the 10-year note 10_YEAR -2.44% used in determining the terms of mortgages and other consumer loans slipping to 1.512%. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande at 50th anniversary of post–World War II reconciliation. At the White House, President Barack Obama on Monday urged Congress to pass a one-year extension of Bush-era tax cuts for families earning under $250,000 a year, while letting tax cuts for upper-income earners lapse. Speaking at a news conference, Obama said he might feel differently in a time of budget surpluses, rather than when the nation is grappling with a large deficit. As Spain’s 10-year debt yield ES:10YR_ESP -0.03% rose above 7%, European finance ministers met to work out the details of a rescue map for banks. The 7% level was seen as the point of no return for Greece, Ireland and Portugal, pushing those nations to request aid from euro-zone partners and the International Monetary Fund. While it’s difficult to be overly bullish, it’s equally hard to be overly bearish “because central bankers are stepping in and doing everything they can to prop up the global economy and asset prices,” according to Key Private Bank’s Raich. “Because inflation is easing they’ll have little choice but to step in with something big to bring down those soaring bond yields in Spain and Italy. Something has to be done to bring those borrowing costs down for those rather large economies,” he said.
