A read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal &Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
Dow Jones Average The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 12,653.12 down 83.17 or 0.65% from Monday's close of 12,736.29. For the year the Dow is up 3.57%. Of the 30 Dow components 10 gained and 20 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was McDonald's up 56 cents and percentage-wise was Kraft up 0.97% . The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Caterpillar down $2,.93 and percentage-wise was Alcoa down 4.11 %.
WSJ pC4 "Dow skid reaches 4th day" by Chris Dieterich says worries from the tech & ind'l sectors & an underwhelming earnings report from Alcoa sent stocks tumbling.
NYT pB10 "Shares fall on concerns about profit growth" by AP says stocks fell Tues for a 4th straight day after a weak start to the earnings season & a sharp decline in oil prices which sent energy shares sharply lower.
USAT p4B "Worries about future profits push stocks lower in present" by Bloomberg says stocks declined for a 4th straight day Tues giving the S&P 500 its longest losing streak since May amid concerns about corp earnings. Alcoa which Mon reported earnings that beat estimates dropped 36 cents as commodities fell amid a stronger US dollar.
IBD pB4 "Uptrend runs into gtrouble; leading stocks whacked" by Victor Reklaitis says stocks gave up early gains to end Tues with significant losses and near their session lows as Tuesday's action was down in higher turnover and the current outlook is uptrend udner pressure.
As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.02 down from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.03 (year ago it was 14.16); today's P/E estimate is 12.15 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 12.15 (year ago it was 12.76) and Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.65 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.63 (last year it was 2.42). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,661.28 down 21.56 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,682.84. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.
If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $2,156 ($168,270).
MarketWatch Tues. 4:07 by Deborah Levine says renewed concern about the euro zone on Tuesday – emanating from both Germany and Italy – sent traders running for cover again, pushing down U.S. stocks and commodities.
