Sun/Sat WSJ: BofA's Countrywide: "Worst Deal in Hisotry of US Finance"

Post No. 1,704 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 6/20/12 and Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 6/20/12.

A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's & Investor's Business Daily and the combined Saturday and Sunday issues of each of the Wall St. Journal &amp  Financial Times, & Sunday's and Saturday's   New York Times & Atlanta Journal Constitution &amp yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Average The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 12,880.09 up 277.83 or 2.2.2% from Thursday's close of 12,602.26.  For the week the Dow was up 239.31 points or 1.90 % from last Friday's close of 12,640.78.  For the year the Dow is up 5.42%. Of the 30 Dow components 29  gained and only JPMorgan  declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM up $4.18 and percentage-wise was Bank of America up 5.68% . The only and therefore biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was JPMorgan down 15 cents or 0.42%.

Fin Times p1 "Markets rebound following EU deal" by Hugh Carnegy says fin'l markets rebounded strongly Fri after European leaders struck an unexpectedly detailed deal to help Spain & Italy face down fears about their ability to survive the eurozone crisis.

Inv. Bus. Daily pB6 "Stocks leap in fast trade, signaling market uptrend" by Paul Whitfield says stocks rumbled higher on news from Europe Fri as 2 US indexes signaled an uptrend is under way.  Friday's action was a floolw through day on S&P 500 & NYSE composite.

Sat. WSJ pB4 "this Junhe was a boon, now a swoon" by Matt jarzemsky says the S&P posted its biggest daily gain of the year and sotcks' best June in more than a decade as investors cheered European leaders' progress on the region's debt problems.

Fin Times p13 "Oil and gas drilelrs among the biggest S&P winners" by Anora Mahmudova says Bank of America rose 0.9%.

NYT pB1 "markets cheer Europe's bailout plan" by Nathaniel Popper says it was the relief rally that ivnestors were waiting for as a new plan to tackle the European banking crisis sent stock markets in many nations to their best day of the year on Fri.

As of the close of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B5 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Saturday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.10 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.89  (year ago it was 14.32); Saturday's P/E estimate is 12.19 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.15 (year ago it was 12.54) and Saturday's dividend yield is 2.60 down from Friday's dividend yield of 2.67 (last year it was 2.4). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,701.84 up 36.71  from  Thursday's closing numerator of 1,665.13. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.73 up $1.23 from Thursday's average closing price of $55.50. The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $51.78 (HD/DD) up $1.05 from Thursday's median closing price of $50.73. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If  Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $3,671 ($170,184 - $166,513).

MarketWatch Fri. 4:48  pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks leapt on Friday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average posting its best month of the year, after Europe agreed on steps to bolster the economies of its more troubled nations. The European Union summit in Brussels had policy makers agreeing to relax repayment conditions for Spanish banks and to lower the bar to possible aid to Italy, along with proposing a $149 billion economic-growth plan for the region.“‘Let’s throw more money at it’ is essentially their plan, and, ‘Hopefully we’ll be in a better position to pay it back at some date in the future.’ It’s making people feel like they got something, but it doesn’t really address the problem,” said Robert Pavlik, chief market strategist at Banyan Partners.“It’s a minor good thing; the amount of money they’ll be paying to borrow is reduced, and the potential for default is reduced, but it just addresses the near short-term issue,” added Pavlik, who believes the European Union needs economic reforms to address the underlying causes.“The corruption and backwards way of doing things in these countries is part of what led up to this, with people avoiding paying taxes and no communication within departments of governments.”Stocks rose and Spanish and Italian bonds rallied after the EU summit provided bits of good news, BP’s intentions over its Russian Venture are questioned and a preview of the Euro 2012 soccer final between Italy and Spain.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +2.20%  rose 277.83 points, or 2.2%, to 12,880.09, with Bank of America Corp. BAC +5.68%  leading the rise. The blue-chip index is up 1.9% for the week; up 3.9% for the month; off 2.5% for the quarter; and up 5.4% for the year. The S&P 500 Index SPX +2.49%  added 33.12 points, or 2.5%, to 1,362.16, with industrials faring best among its 10 major sectors. The index is up 2% for the week; up 4% for June; off 3.3% for the quarter; and up 8.3% year-to-date.Nike Inc. NKE -9.40%  retreated 9.4% after the athletic-shoe retailer reported a drop in net income in its latest quarter. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +3.00%  climbed 85.56 points, or 3%, to 2,935.05. The index is up 1.5% for the week; up 3.8% for June; down 5.1% for the quarter; and up nearly 13% year-to date. For every stock falling nearly seven gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where about 1.1 billion shares traded. Composite volume topped 4.5 billion.
A day after falling to an eight-month low, crude-oil futures CLQ2 +9.20%  rose $7.27 to $83.96 a barrel on the belief that help for Europe’s debt troubles would remove one barrier to global economic growth.Oil prices leaped 9%, biggest gain since March 2009.Gold futures GCQ2 +3.11%  climbed $53.80 to $1,604.20 an ounce. The euro EURUSD +0.0405%  gained against other currencies, including the dollar. U.S. Treasury prices slid, with the yield on the 10-year note 10_YEAR 0.00%  rising to 1.658%.Enthusiasm for equities and other assets continued after economic data had consumer spending holding flat in May and consumer sentiment falling in June.
“The recovery has weakened, consumer spending is still growing, but not at the same pace as it was earlier this year,” said Scott Hoyt, senior director of consumer economics at Moody’s Analytics.
“We’re cautiously optimistic that some of the drivers of the weakness appear to be fading away,” said Hoyt, who cites the increase in oil and gasoline prices that took place earlier in the year, and the warmer winter that appeared to have shifted both hiring and spending forward.“Presumably those effects should be waning. Corporations are flush with cash, and consumers clearly have a lot of pent-up demand since spending has been so slow for so long, so we think there is potential,” Hoyt said.
