7/12/12 Thurs. pm Dow Closes at 12,573.27 down 31.26 or 0.25%


Post No. 1,722 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

 The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 12,573.27 down 31.26  or 0.25% from Wednesday's close of 12,604.53.  . Of the 30 Dow components 8 gained and 22 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was McDonald's up $2.40 and percentage-wise was Merck up 4.13% . The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM down $2.15  and percentage-wise was Intel down 2.56%.

As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.16 up from Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.02 (year ago it was 14.19); today's P/E estimate is 12.15 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 12.15 (year ago it was 12.76) and Thursday's dividend yield is 2.66 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.65 (last year it was 2.42). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,661.30 down 9.55    from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,671.85. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.38 down 0.13 from Tuesday's average closing price of $55.51. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $49.49  (HD/DIS) up   $0.02 from Wednesday's median closing price of $49.47 (HD/DIS. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $955    ($1666,530 - $166,130).

MarketWatch Wednes. 4:15 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks indexes on Thursday extended their longest losing streak in nearly eight weeks as investors worried about global growth, corporate outlooks and the inability of politicians in Europe as well as Washington to implement fiscal policy. "All eyes are on Washington to offer up a credible program soon to be helpful on a number of fronts. And all eyes are on Europe to do basically the same thing locally," said Jim Russell, chief equity strategist for U.S. Bank Wealth Management. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.25% declined 31.26 points, or 0.3%, to close at 12,573.27. The S&P 500 SPX -0.50% fell 6.69 points, or 0.5%, to 1,334.76. The Nasdaq CompositeCOMP -0.75% slid 21.79 points, or 0.85, to 2,866.19. Both the Dow and the S&P 500 extended their fall into a sixth day, while the Nasdaq dropped for a fifth session.

Dow Jones Average The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 12,604.53 down 48.59 or 0.38% from Wednesday's close of 12,604.53.  For the year the Dow is up 3.17%. . Of the 30 Dow components 8 gained and 22 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Exxon up $1.27 and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard up 3.04% . The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Boeing down $1.70 or 2.32%.

WSJ pC4 "Fed pads 5 day skid for stocks" by Jonathan Cheng says investors pared most of their losses in late trading but still gave the Dow its 5th straight loss after minutes of the Fed Res' June policy meeting showed few signs that central bankers were about to take further action.

NYT pB3 "Reacting to Fed minutes, indexes dip but recover" by AP says the stock market bounced back from an afternoon slump Wed after the Fed released disappointing minutes from its June meeting.  Chevron rose following oil prices higher.

USA Today p4B "S&P 500 overcomes early losses to close flat; Dow, Nasdaq drop" by Bloomberg says the S&P erased deeper losses in the finalhour of trading as investors weighgted the Fed's latest policy minutes.  Bank of America and JPMorgan added 15 cents and 34 cents espectively as fin'l firms rallied.  Exxon rose $1.27 as oil ebounded from the lowest clsoe in more than a week.  DuPont fell 51 cetns after analysts said it may miss estimates.

Daily pB2 "nasdaq off 4th day in row as most leaders struggle" by David Saito-Chung says the nasdaq failed to halt its losing streak Wed but a rebound in the final 90 minutes shaved its losses as Wed's action was "closes mixed in lower trade" and the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.

MarketWatch Wednes. 4:13 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks ended lower on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 extending its longest down streak since May 18, after the Federal Reserve failed to offer a more decisive signal of further stimulus. "All monetary policy is Band-Aids while the patient gets sicker and sicker," said Gary Flam, portfolio manager at Bel Air Investment Advisors. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA-0.38%declined 48.59 points, or 0.4%, to 12,604.53. The S&P 500 SPX-0.0015%edged fractionally lower to 1,341.45. Both the Dow and the S&P 500 ended in the red for a fifth session. Off for a fourth session, the Nasdaq Composite COMP-0.49% slid 14.35 points, or 0.5%, to 2,887.98.
