8/17/12 Fri. pm Dow Closes at 13,275.2 up 25.09 or 0.19%

Post No. 1,768 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of August 17, 2012 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 8/17/12.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Friday at 13,275.2  up 25.09 or 0.19% from Thursday's close of 13,13250.11. Of the 30 Dow components 13 gained, Procter & Gamble was unchanged  and  169  declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was  United Technologies up $1.60 or 2.03%. The  biggest decliner dollar-wise was   and percentage-wise was Merck down 65 cents or 1.48%.

As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.12914682. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is  14.28 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio  (year ago it was 12.28); today's P/E estimate is  12.62 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate  (year ago it was 11.39) and today's dividend yield is  2.6 down from yesterday's dividend yield   (last year it was 2.78). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,714.44 up 3.24 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,711.20. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.12914682) you get the increase in today's Dow.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $57.15 up113 cents from Thursday's average closing price of $57.04. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $59.76 (HD/DD). The lowest volume was 3M Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $330 ($171,450 - $171,120 ).  Fri. 4: 21 pm by Wallace Witkowsi says US  stocks closed higher Friday, capping another low-volume week where all three major indexes logged weekly gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.19% closed up 25.09 points, or 0.2%, at 13,275.20, and the S&P 500 Index SPX +0.19% rose 2.65 points, or 0.2%, to 1,418.16. The Nasdaq Composite Index finished up 14.20 points, or 0.5%, at 3,076.59. Both the Dow and the S&P have logged gains for the sixth consecutive week, the longest weekly winning streak since January 2011. The Nasdaq was up for its fifth week in a row. Stocks traded in a narrow range Friday on below-average volume following the release of data showing a rise in consumer sentiment and economic indicators.
