A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's & Investor's Business Daily, the Sat/Sun combined issues of Wall St. Journal & Financial Times, & Sunday's & Saturday's New York Times & Atlanta Journal Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
Dow Jones Average The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 13,096.17 up 217.29 or 1.69% from Thursday's close of 12,878.88. For the year the Dow is up 7.19%. For the week the Dow was up 20.51 or 0.015% from last Friday's close of 13,075.66. Of the 30 Dow components 29 gained and only Verizon declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM up 44.05 and percentage-wise was Kraft up 4.03%. The only and therefore biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Verizon down 17 cents or 0.39%.
Inv. Bus. Daily pB6 "Stock idnexs up sharply but volume falls off pace" by Paul Whitfield says stocks ended a 4 session losing streak Fri with a charge built on light vol. Friday's action saw big gains in lower volume as the current outlook is a confirmed upgtrend.
WSJ pB5 "blue chips rally to a 3 month high" by Matt Jarzemsky & Tomi Kilgore says the Dow posted its biggest one day jump since late June turning the index positive for the week, after a closely watched measure of employment rose more than expected. Among the biggest gainers on the Dow were Kraft up $1.57 and Procter & Gamble up $1.99 as both reported better than expected earnings.
Sat. NYT pB6 "After bad week, markets surge on strong jobs report" by AP says stocks surged on Fri with the Dow gaining more than 200 points to end a 4 day losing streak after the Labor Dept reported increased hiring last month.
Fin Times p11 "EOG eclipses broader rally after solid earnings report" by Martha Poon & Kandy Wong says ExxonMobil the most hevily weighted stock in the energy index, rose 2.2% and Chevron gained 2.2%. AT&T added 1.8% but Verizon lost 0.3%. Procter & Gamble was up 1% this week as it reported sales that missed analysts' expectations.
As of the close of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Saturday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.28 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.02 (year ago it was 12.82); Saturday's P/E estimate is 12.55 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.45 (year ago it was 11.48) and Saturday's dividend yield is 2.58 down from Friday's dividend yield of 2.62 (last year it was 2.66). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,730.39 up 28.71 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,701.68. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $57.68 up 96 cents from Thursday's average closing price of $56.72. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $51.04 (HD/DIS) up 78 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $50.26 (HD/DIS. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $2,821 ($173,039 - $170,168).
MarketWatch.com Fri. 4:16 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stockson Friday rallied, extending a winning run for the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 index into a fourth week, on renewed optimisim on Europe and after the July jobs report exceeded expectations. "The day started in the green in Europe," said John De Clue, a regional investment director at U.S. Bank. European Central Bank President Mario Draghi "all but said the ECB may reactivate the program where they step in to buy the bonds of peripheral countries to drive interest rates down," said De Clue. The 163,000 increase in payrolls last month "was a good number, but not enough to change the game," he added. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +1.69% rose 217.29 points, or 1.7%, to 13,096.17, up 0.2% for the week. The S&P 500 index SPX +1.90% added 25.99 points, or 1.9%, to 1,390.99, leaving it 0.4% higher from last week's close. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +2.00% climbed 58.13 points, or 2%, to 2,967.90, a weekly rise of 0.3%.
