http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 1,775 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings in both cases as of 8/17/12.

A read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 13,203.58 down 68.06 or 0.51% from Monday's close of 13,271.64. For the year the Dow is p 8.07%. Of the 30 Dow components 9 gained and 21 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was JPMorgan up 67 cents or 1.79%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM down $1.85 and percentage-wise were Merck and Verizon each down 1.85 %.

WSJ pC4 "Blue Chips slip for a 2nd day" by Chris Dieterick says the Dow finished with its biggest decline in almost 3 weeks, falling for the 2nd session in a row after knocking on the door of multiyear hights.    Stocks turned lower even as the euro rose to a 6 week high vs. the dollar & the yen bolstered by optimism that the European Central Bank will take more steps to address the Continent's debt problem.  Fin'ls weer the only S&P Sector go gain.  JPMorgan was up 67 cents.

Fin Times p20 "First Soloar shines bright as energy sector looks to improved demand" by Kandy Wong says Exxon the most heavily weighted stock in the energy sector shed 0.6% while Chevron fell 0.5%.  Bank of America gained 0.5% and JPMorgan was up 1.8%.  Alcoa, hit by the slowing global growth, was up 0.2%.  DuPont lost 0.3%.

USA Today p4B "Europe news pushes markets up, but they end day with losses" by AP says the S&P and Dow touched their highest points in more than 4 years Tues, helped by more talk that the European Central Bank may buy struggling nations' bonds.  But a morning rally faded, & stocks ended lower.  JPMorgan and other firms with ties to Europe rose more than the overall market.

IBD pB4 "Market sees distributiona s stocks reverse lower" by Vic Reklaitis says stocks gave up moderate early gains Tues to close lower for the 2nd day in a row.  Tuesday's action was negative reversal in higher volume and the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

NYT pB7 "Strong start on Wall St. turns lower" by Reuters says stocks fell on Tues after the S&P touched a 4 year high but retreated in late trading.

As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.12914682. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.98 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.05 (year ago it was 12.47); today's P/E estimate is 12.64 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 12.64 (year ago it was 11.11) and today's dividend yield is 2.54 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.53 (last year it was 2.81). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,705.20 down 8.78 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,713.98. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.12914682) you get the decrease in today's Dow .Each dollar increase in the Dow increases the Dow Jones Industrial Averageby 7.74.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.84 down 29 cents from Monday's average closing price of $57.13. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.36 (HD/DD) down 17 cents from Monday's median closing price of $53.53 (HD/DD). The lowest volume was 3M Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would havelost $878 ($171,398 - 170,520).

MarketWatch.com Tues. 4: 09 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks declined Tuesday, with the S&P 500 index SPX-0.35% retreating from a four-year high as Apple Inc.AAPL-1.37% shares turned lower, overtaking optimism about Europe. "When Apple started to give back too much of its intraday gains, the Nasdaq futures gave it all back and Apple turned from a 10-point gain to a 9-point loss before stabilizing," said Elliot Spar, market strategist at Stifel Nicolaus. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA-0.51% dropped 68.06 points, or 0.5%, to 13,203.58. The S&P 500 index lost 4.96 points, or 0.4%, to 1,413.17. The Nasdaq Composite COMP-0.29% fell 8.95 points, or 0.3%, to 3,067.26.
