8/23/12 Thurs. pm Dow Closes at 13,057.46 down 115.3 or 0.88%

Post No. 1,778 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings in both cases as of 8/17/12.

 The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 13,057.46 down 115.3 or 0.88% from Wednesday's close of 13,172.76. Of the 30 Dow components only Kraft and Pfizer gained and 28 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Kraft up 26.5 cents or 0.65%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise   was Boeing down $2.44 and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard down 8.15%.


As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.12914682. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.95 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.98 (year ago it was 12.63); today's P/E estimate is 12.64 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 12.64 (year ago it was 11.11) and today's dividend yield is 2.55 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.54 (last year it was 2.70). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,686.32 down 14.9 from  Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,701.22. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.12914682) you get the decrease in today's Dow .Each dollar increase in the Dow increases the Dow Jones Industrial Averageby 7.74.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.40 down $3.31 cents from Wednesday's average closing price of $56.71. The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.40 (HD/DD) down 32 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $53.72 (HD/DD). The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,490 ($170,122 - 168,632).

Bullard's comments to CNBC is "what has caused today's market swoon," said Kim Forrest, equity analyst at Fort Pitt Capital Group Inc. Down for a fourth session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.88% fell 115.3 points, or 0.9%, to 13,057.46. The S&P 500 index SPX -0.81% declined 11.41 points, or 0.8%, to 1,402.08. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.66% shed 20.27 points, or 0.7%, to 3,053.4.

A read of the print editions of Thursday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Average:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 13,172.76 down 30.82 or 0.23% from Tuesday's close of 13,203.58. For the year the Dow is up 7.82%. Of the 30 Dow components 15 gained and 15 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise were DuPont and United Technologies each up 39 cents and percentage-wise was DuPont up 0.77%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was  Caterpillar down $1.57 and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard down 3.66%.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks mixed in day driven by Fed hopes" by Jon Cheng says US stocks erased earlier losses to finish the day flat, as ivnestors rode hopes that the Fed may at again to stimulate the economy.   HewLett-Packard dropped 73 cents ahead of its earnings report and in after hours trading fell 4.4% after topping quarterly earnings expectations but missing rev estimates.

Fin Times p20 "Dell drags down tech sector after quarterly results disappoint" by Kandy Wong says tech stocks moved lower albeit the braoder market shifted up, after Dell shares fell in response to disappointing quarterly results.  Hewlett-Packard added more than 2% in after hours trading as it reported 3Q earnings per share of $1 vs. analysts estimates of 98 cents.  Bank stocks were mixed as Bank of America rose 0.4% and JPMorgan dropped 0.6%.

NYT pB8 "A mixed day after remarks from Fed" by Reuters says the S&P closed flat on Wed erasing early losses after minutes from the latest Fed Res meeting indicated taht the bank might be ready for another round of stimulus.

USA Today p4B "Stocks rebound from early losses after Fed news released" b y AP says traders drew comfort Wed from signals that the Fed is worried about the pace of the US economic recovery and feels more urgency re: providing help. 

IBD pB2 "Builders snare more gains as key indexes reverse up" by David Saito-Chung says most of the key stocks indexes turned measly morning losses into tiny gains in lower vol across the board as Wed's action saw positive reversal in light vol and the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.



Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,701.22 down 3.98 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,705.20. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $398 ($170,520 - $170,122).

MarketWatch.com Wed. 4: 13 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks ended lower on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 extending its longest down streak since May 18, after the Federal Reserve failed to offer a more decisive signal of further stimulus. "All monetary policy is Band-Aids while the patient gets sicker and sicker," said Gary Flam, portfolio manager at Bel Air Investment Advisors. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.23% declined 48.59 points, or 0.4%, to 12,604.53. The S&P 500 SPX +0.02% edged fractionally lower to 1,341.45. Both the Dow and the S&P 500 ended in the red for a fifth session. Off for a fourth session, the Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.21% slid 14.35 points, or 0.5%, to 2,887.98.
