Dow Jones Average The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 13,275.2 up 25.09 or 0.19% from Thursday's close of 13,13250.11. For the year the Dow is up %. For the week the Dow was 0.5%. Of the 30 Dow components 13 gained, Procter & Gamble was unchanged and 169 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was United Technologies up $1.60 or 2.03%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was and percentage-wise was Merck down 65 cents or 1.48%.

As of the close of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B5 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.12914682. Saturday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.31 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.28 (year ago it was 12.07); Saturday's P/E estimate is 12.64 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.62 (year ago it was 11.11) and Saturday's dividend yield is 2.64 up from Friday's dividend yield of 2.6 (last year it was 2.82). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,714.44 up 3.24 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,711.20. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.12914682) you get the increase in today's Dow.Each dollar increase in the Dow increases the Dow Jones Industrial Average up 7.74.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $57.15 up113 cents from Thursday's average closing price of $57.04. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $59.76 (HD/DD). The lowest volume was 3M Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $330 ($171,450 - $171,120 ).
