MarketWatch 10/15/13 Tues. 4:24 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks tumbled Tuesday on signs of any progress toward a budget deal unraveling, two days before the nation is expected to hit its debt limit.
At a news conference held after a closed-door session, House Republican leaders said they were still working to find a way to end the partial government shutdown and raise the debt limit. House Speaker John Boehner said lawmakers were trying to find a bipartisan way forward. As House Republicans worked on an alternative to a bipartisan measure expected from the Senate, NBC News reported Senate budget negotiations had been postponed as senators wait to first see the House GOP plan before proceeding. And, Bloomberg News quoted Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., as saying the discussions had “all fallen apart.”
“I can’t imagine anybody wants to get this much closer to the deadline and not move forward with something that is passable,” said Art Hogan, market strategist at Lazard Capital Markets, referring to the expiration of U.S. borrowing authority on Thursday.“Someone didn’t get the memo at the House that they can’t attach anything related to the Affordable Care Act, that you’re negotiating over whether or not we should pay or bills as a country by changing a law that has already been put in place,” said Hogan. Fred Dickson, chief investment strategist at Davison Cos., advised clients holding more than the usual level of cash in reserve to “wait until the impasse in Washington concludes before committing cash to new equity positions.” The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.87%  dropped 133.25 points, or 0.9%, to 15,168.01, with Home Depot Inc. HD +0.24%  pacing losses that included 28 of its 30 components.A day after closing at a three-week high, the S&P 500 index SPX -0.71%  fell 12.08 points, or 0.7%, to 1,698.06. Coca-Cola Co. KO -0.66% shares shed 0.7% after the beverage maker reported a rise in third-quarter profit.Johnson & Johnson JNJ +0.54% climbed 0.1% after the provider of health-care products raised its full-year outlook.
“The picture emerging from the first big day of the third-quarter reporting cycle today is a mixed one, with weak-looking results from Coca-Cola and Citigroup and a handy beat from Johnson & Johnson. We now have [third-quarter] results from 35 S&P 500 companies,” Sheraz Mian, research director at Zacks Investment Research Inc. in Chicago, noted in emailed commentary. While still early, fourth-quarter earnings estimates have “come down a bit in recent days. And the coming days of estimate cuts could become a more serious headwind for the market than Washington worries,” Mian added. “We see the current federal government partial shutdown as slightly raising fourth-quarter revenue and earnings risk factors, something that we do not see in current stock prices,” said Dickson at Davidson Cos.The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.56%  declined 21.26 points, or 0.6%, to 3,794.01.Shares of Apple Inc. AAPL +0.05%  gained 0.5% after the iPhone maker said it hired Angela Ahrendts, currently chief executive of Burberry Group PLC UK:BRBY -7.63% , to be its new retail chief.  For every stock gaining, more than three fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where 689 million shares traded. Composite volume surpassed 3.3 billion.
The dollar DXY +0.19% gained; commodities slid and the 10-year Treasury yield 10_YEAR +1.45%  that helps determine mortgage rates and other consumer loans rose 4 basis points to 2.731%.A report had manufacturing in the New York region expanding at a slower pace than anticipated this month, with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s index down to 1.5 from 6.3 in September. In a speech delivered in Mexico City, New York Federal Reserve President William Dudley said the Fed’s large balance sheet would not cause it to change its monetary policy. Also Tuesday, Richard Fisher, president of the Dallas Fed, told Reuters he doubted that the Federal Reserve would cut the pace of its asset-purchase program at its meeting later in the month

MarketWatch 10/14/13 Mon. 4:24 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks climbed on Monday, with the Dow industrials and S&P 500 extending gains into a fourth session, as lawmakers appeared to be inching towards an agreement to raise the debt ceiling, three days before U.S. borrowing authority is set to expire. “The market is very nervous about what is going on in Washington, D.C.,” said Paul Mangus, head of equity research and strategy at Wells Fargo Private Bank. “The markets are going through these emotions of hope and fear. We’re looking for signs of progress such as everyone else is doing, in the absence of more information,” he said. After a 101-point drop, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.42%  ended with a gain of 64.15 points, or 0.4%, at 15,301.26, with Pfizer Inc. PFE -0.17%   leading gains that included 22 of its 30 components. The S&P 500 indexSPX +0.41%  added 6.94 points, or 0.4%, to 1,710.14, with health care and energy the best performing and telecommunications and utilities the laggards of its 10 major sectors.Whirlpool Corp. TWC +0.05% , to add its video service to set-top boxes. The Nasdaq Composite index /quotes/zigman/12633936 COMP +0.62%  rose 23.40 points, or 0.6%, to 3,815.27.
For every two shares on the decline, roughly three gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where 575 million shares traded. Composite volume approached 2.6 billion shares. Equities maintained modest gains after the meeting was delayed to give congressional leaders more time to hammer out an agreement. Crude-oil futures CLX3 +0.20%  gained 39 cents, or 0.4%, to $102.41 a barrel and gold GCZ3 +0.24%  rose $8.40, or 0.7%, to $1,276.60 an ounce after falling 3% last week.
The dollar DXY -0.10%  fell against the currencies of major U.S. trading partners including the euro EURUSD -0.01% . The Treasury market is closed Monday for the Columbus Day holiday.
And, while Wall Street’s attention remained largely on Capitol Hill, a number of companies will report third-quarter earnings in coming days. “We’re not expecting this to be a very strong earnings reporting period,” said Mangus at Wells Fargo, noting the reduced guidance for the third quarter. “What is going to be more important will be the guidance into 2014,” he added. Tuesday’s schedule includes Citigroup Inc.  C +0.04%  , Coca-Cola Co. KO +0.11%   and Intel Corp. INTC +0.21% ; results from International Business Machines Corp.IBM -0.16%  are expected Wednesday, while Thursday’s lineup includes Union Pacific Corp.UNP -0.03% , Verizon Communication Inc. VZ -0.06%  and Google Inc. GOOG -0.01% . On Friday, General Electric Co.GE -0.08%  is among those expected to report. On Friday, the Dow industrials halted a two-week losing streak and tallied their largest three-day points gain since Dec. 2, 2011, on signs of progress toward a debt accord on Capitol Hill. But the effort at avoiding a default lost steam during the weekend. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Sunday said he’d held a “productive conversation” with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. But the discussion has failed to yield a definitive plan yet to put to Congress for a vote.
The government started a partial shutdown on Oct. 1 after Congress did not approve a spending measure for the fiscal year. The gridlock comes along with Thursday’s deadline to raise the U.S. borrowing authority. Without legislative action, the country could default on its debts, a scenario seen as threatening to the U.S. and global economy. “Both sides are behaving like spoiled children. It’s inconceivable that they are going to try to run this up to the last minute. The house is on fire, and they are arguing how to put water on the fire,” said Robert Pavlik, chief market strategist at Banyan Partners LLC.
