http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,399 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 15373.83 up 205.82 or 1.36% from Tuesday's close of 15168.01. Of  the Dow components  2  gained and 28  declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Johnson & Johnson up 13 cents or 0.14% .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise  was IBM down $2.46 and percentage-wise was Home Depot down 1.53%.

As of the open  of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6   of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Wednesday's  trailing P/E ratio is  17.07 down   from Tuesday's trailing P/E of 17.22  (last year it was 14.71);  today's    P/E estimate is  14.13 unchanged from Tuesday's  P/E estimate of 14.13  (year ago it was 12.62) and today's  dividend yield is 2.20 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.18  (last year it was 2.50). The Dow's all-time high was 15,676.94   on September 18, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2393.95 up 32.05   from Tuesday's closing numerator of 2361.90. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.80 up $1.07 from Tuesday's average closing price of 78.73.  The median closing price of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $75.09 (UNH/HD) up 31 cents $1.43 from Tuesday's median closing price of $74.78 (WMT/HD).  The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was Intel.

If  Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $3,205   ($239,935 - $236,190 )  .

MarketWatch 10/16/13 Wed. 4:24 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks surged on Wednesday, lifting the S&P 500 near its record, as the Senate reached an agreement to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling, with votes later in the day expected to end the fiscal standoff.  A major factor in helping equities withstand the latest Washington drama is the Federal Reserve’s September decision not to begin reducing its $85 billion in monthly asset purchases. “They look almost clairvoyant in their call not to taper; they saw the debate getting nasty in Washington,” Jim Russell, regional investment director for US Bank Wealth Management in Cincinnati, said of the political battle that started with a GOP effort to defund health-care legislation passed in 2010. The bipartisan agreement would fund the federal government through Jan. 15 and raise the debt ceiling through Feb. 7, according to a Senate Democratic aide. Both the House and the Senate still need to vote on the measure, with would bring an end to the partial government shutdown now in a 16th day. “It appears that risk assets are anticipating a conclusion to the uncertainty, which is always a positive for the capital markets. The markets are cheering not only the removal of uncertainty, but the possibility of two positives down the road: number one is deficit reduction and number two is the possible removal of sequestration cuts. Perhaps some more thoughtful deficit-reduction techniques would be in play,” said Russell. Just 4 points, or 0.2%, from its Sept. 18 record close, the S&P 500 index SPX +1.38%  climbed 23.46 points, or 1.4%, to 1,721.52, with financials and health care pacing gains among its 10 major industry groups. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +1.36% climbed 205.82 points, or 1.4%, to 15,373.83, with J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.JPM -0.32% leading gains that included all but three of its 30 components. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.20% gained 45.42 points, or 1.2%, to 3,839.43, its highest close since Sept. 8, 2000. Shares of Bank of America Corp. BAC -0.14% climbed 2.3% after the company reported a third-quarter profit of $2.22 billion versus a loss in the year-earlier period. Stanley Black & Decker Inc. SWK +0.13%  declined 14% after the tool maker reduced its outlook for the year. For every stock falling, four gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where more than 750 million shares traded. Composite volume cleared 3.5 billion.
Late Tuesday, Fitch Ratings warned it might downgrade the sovereign credit rating of the U.S. from AAA as a result of the standoff over the nation’s debt limit. “The scariest thing about this episode was the lack of understanding by some in Congress of the consequences of going into default. Just as disturbing are those in the public who backed them and did not understand the ramifications,” Elliot Spar, market strategist at Stifel Nicolaus & Co., noted in afternoon commentary. The events of the last two weeks, along with the debt-limit showdown that took place in August 2011, raises the question of whether other currencies should be considered for reserve-currency status. “The Chinese are watching, Europe is watching, other countries are watching. It chips away at the dollar’s credibility as the only reserve currency on the global stage,” said Russell. On Wednesday, the dollar DXY +0.04%  edged higher against the currencies of major U.S. trading partners including the yen USDJPY +0.61% . Treasury prices were mixed, with the yield on the 10-year note 10_YEAR -2.23% used in figuring mortgage rates and other consumer loans falling 6 basis points to 2.670%. The price of crude futures CLX3 +0.99%  rose $1.08, or 1.1%, to $102.29 a barrel and gold futures GCZ3 +0.52% gained $9.10, or 0.7%, to $1,282.30 an ounce. Economic data showed Wednesday that the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo housing-market index slipped to 55 in October from 57 in September, with confidence falling to a four-month low on the Washington discord and amid mortgage-rate volatility.

MarketWatch 10/15/13 Tues. 4:24 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks tumbled Tuesday on signs of any progress toward a budget deal unraveling, two days before the nation is expected to hit its debt limit. At a news conference held after a closed-door session, House Republican leaders said they were still working to find a way to end the partial government shutdown and raise the debt limit. House Speaker John Boehner said lawmakers were trying to find a bipartisan way forward. As House Republicans worked on an alternative to a bipartisan measure expected from the Senate, NBC News reported Senate budget negotiations had been postponed as senators wait to first see the House GOP plan before proceeding. And, Bloomberg News quoted Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., as saying the discussions had “all fallen apart.”“I can’t imagine anybody wants to get this much closer to the deadline and not move forward with something that is passable,” said Art Hogan, market strategist at Lazard Capital Markets, referring to the expiration of U.S. borrowing authority on hursday.“Someone didn’t get the memo at the House that they can’t attach anything related to the Affordable Care Act, that you’re negotiating over whether or not we should pay or bills as a country by changing a law that has already been put in place,” said Hogan. Fred Dickson, chief investment strategist at Davison Cos., advised clients holding more than the usual level of cash in reserve to “wait until the impasse in Washington concludes before committing cash to new equity positions.” The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.87%  dropped 133.25 points, or 0.9%, to 15,168.01, with Home Depot Inc. KO -0.66% shares shed 0.7% after the beverage maker reported a rise in third-quarter profit.Johnson & Johnson JNJ +0.54% climbed 0.1% after the provider of health-care products raised its full-year outlook.“The picture emerging from the first big day of the third-quarter reporting cycle today is a mixed one, with weak-looking results from Coca-Cola and Citigroup and a handy beat from Johnson & Johnson. We now have [third-quarter] results from 35 S&P 500 companies,” Sheraz Mian, research director at Zacks Investment Research Inc. in Chicago, noted in emailed commentary. While still early, fourth-quarter earnings estimates have “come down a bit in recent days. And the coming days of estimate cuts could become a more serious headwind for the market than Washington worries,” Mian added. “We see the current federal government partial shutdown as slightly raising fourth-quarter revenue and earnings risk factors, something that we do not see in current stock prices,” said Dickson at Davidson Cos.The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.56%  declined 21.26 points, or 0.6%, to 3,794.01.Shares of Apple Inc. AAPL +0.05%  gained 0.5% after the iPhone maker said it hired Angela Ahrendts, currently chief executive of Burberry Group PLC UK:BRBY -7.63% , to be its new retail chief.  For every stock gaining, more than three fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where 689 million shares traded.
