Post No. 2,412 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of Oct. 22  and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of Oct. 22.

A read of the print editions of  Thursday's  Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's News Daily,  New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & amp; Constitution  & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and  Wednesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 15413.33 down 54.33 or 0.35% from Tuesday's close of 15467.66. For the year the Dow is up 17.62%. Of  the Dow components   8   gained, Coca-Cola was unchanged  and   21 declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Boeing up $6.54 or 5.34% .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Caterpillar down $5.41 or 6.07%.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks take breather with global equities" by Alexandra Scaggs says US stocks broadly retreated Wed a day after hitting a high, as oft earnings from Caterpillar and selloffs in europe & Asia doused investor optimism.  Boeing gained $6.54 after raising its full year projection for profits & topping both earnings and rev growth forecasts amid strength in its comm'l aircraft biz.

FT p21 "Wall Street" by Jason Abbruzzese says the S&P stepped back fromr ecord highs but shares in Northrop rose downplayed the impact of US budget cuts.  Boeing gained 5.3% and the Dow was led lower by Caterpillar which fell 6.1%.  JPMorgan was hit by reports it is in talks for another huge settlement.

IBD pB2 "The big picture" by David Saito-Chung says stocks stocks took a well needed rest Wed but a handful of leading stocks didn't bother doing the same.  Negative economic headlines out of China seemed to impact the major US indexes.  Wednesday's action saw moderate losses in mixed vol while the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

NYT pB9 "Shares slip on earnings ending 4 day streak" by AP says the stock market dropped on Wed after Caterpillar reported weak earnings and the price of oilf ell to tis lowest point in almsot 4 months hurting energy stocks.

As of the open  of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5   of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Thursday's   trailing P/E ratio is  17.31 up  from Wednesday's  trailing P/E of 17.26  (last year it was 13.92);  Thursday's   P/E estimate is  14.13 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 14.13  (year ago it was 12.59) and today's  dividend yield is 2.17 up from yesterday's  dividend yield of 2.16  (last year it was 2.59). The Dow's all-time high was 15,676.94   on September 18, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2400.10 down 8.35   from Tuesday's closing numerator of 2408.45. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $80 down 29 cents from Tuesday's average closing price of 80.29.  The median closing price of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $75.73 (NKE/WMT) down 23 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $75.96 (NKE/WMT).  The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was Cisco.

If  Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $835    ($240,856 - $240,010) .

MarketWatch 10/23/13 Wed. 4:42 pm by Kate Gibson & Wallace Witkowski says U.S. stocks
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.35%  declined 54.33 points, or 0.4%, to close at 15,413.33, with 21 of its 30 components in negative terrain. CaterpillarCAT -0.29%  paced blue-chip losses, off 6.1% after the heavy equipment lowered its earnings outlook. Boeing Co. BA -0.10%  shares led gains on the Dow, closing up 5.3%, after the plane manufacturer raised its 2013 forecast. “Earnings are about what you might expect in a slow-growth economy; some areas are doing well, and some are not doing well at all,” said Bruce Bittles, chief investment strategist at RW Baird & Co. “We’re at that point where the infamous ‘Wall of Worry’ becomes significant. Margins have peaked, so we have to live off revenue growth more than earlier in the cycle,” said Bruce McCain, chief investment strategist at Key Private Bank. The S&P 500 indexSPX -0.47%  fell 8.29 points, or 0.5%, to close at 1,746.38, with energy the worst performing and consumer staples faring the best of the 10 major industry sectors. The S&P 500 closed at a new all-time high of 1,754.67 on Tuesday. The midweek swoon “feels like a normal pullback,” said Bittles, who notes that Wall Street has “rallied almost 100 S&P points since two weeks ago.” Broadcom Corp. BRCM -0.57%  fell 2.9% after the wireless-device chip maker projected fourth-quarter revenue below estimates and said it would cut up to 1,150 jobs. The Nasdaq Composite IndexCOMP -0.57%  fell 22.49 points, or 0.6%, to close at 3,907.07. Declining stocks outnumbered advancers slightly on the New York Stock Exchange, where more than 708 million shares traded by the close. Composite volume surpassed 3.6 billion. Decliners outnumbered gainers by nearly two to one on the Nasdaq, where more than 463 million shares traded by the close. Composite volume for Nasdaq-listed stocks topped 1.9 billion shares. Investor sentiment was also hit by worries about possible monetary constrictions in China and softness among European banks. “There is continuing worry that they are extending bad loans and building things that aren’t needed,” said McCain of a Bloomberg News report that China’s largest banks had tripled the number of bad loans written off in the first half of the year to clear up their books before another round of defaults. “A movement to tighten monetary conditions to slow growth in China is a modest threat to global economic growth that could spill over not only to the European stock market, but to U.S. stocks given the importance of China as a U.S. export market,” Fred Dickson, chief investment officer at Davidson Companies, noted in emailed commentary. The Dollar DXY +0.03% gained against global currencies such as the euro EURUSD +0.01% but not the yen USDJPY -0.03% . A day after its strongest rise in a month, the 10-year Treasury yield 10_YEAR +0.08% fell nearly 2 basis points to 2.50%. See: Dollar, yen get safety bid. ”Yields are coming down pretty quickly here, which suggests the rate of inflation is going to be soft going forward, and the economy with it,” said Bittles, who adds falling commodity prices also reflect a slowing economy. But the scenario holds potential positives, given “the housing market had been threatened when yields went to 3% on the 10-year, and lower energy prices means lower gasoline prices, which means a tax cut for the consumer,” Bittles added.
On the New York Mercantile Exchange, gold futures GCZ3 -0.73% lost $8.60, or 0.6%, to settle at $1,334 an ounce, and the cost of a barrel of oil CLZ3 -1.17% declined $1.44, or 1.5%, to settle at $96.86.
