http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,398 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of  Tuesday's  Wall St. Journal,   Financial Times, New York Times,  Investor's News Daily, USA Today,   Atlanta Journal & amp; Constitution and Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg)  yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and  Monday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 15168.01 down 133.25 or 0.87% from Monday's close of 15301.26. For the year the Dow is up 15.75%. Of  the Dow components 2   gained and  28 declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise  8 and percentage-wise was Johnson & Johnson up 13 cents or 0.14% .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise  was IBM down $2.46 and percentage-wise was Home Depot down 1.53%.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks decline as deal talks stall" by Aleandra Scaggs says stocks fell due to the budget impasse in DC.

IBD pB4 "Stocks fall in heavy trade as debt drama continues" by Juan Carlos Arancibia says Tuesday's action saw indexes drop, close near session lows as the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.  After the close Intel rose as it beat profit expectations.

NYT pB5 "Shares teeter in tandem with debt talks in Washington" & AJC pA11 "DC mire weighs on markets" by AP says stocks fell Tues due to DC's debate.  It was the first decline in a week.

FT p23 "Buyback delivers for FedEx as earnings lead to mixed trading" by Jason Abbruzzese says earnings reports helped to provide investors with a respite from the new from DC.  Coke dropped 0.7% after reporting a fall in rev but 3Q profits rose to meet expectations.  Johnson & Johnson rose 0.1% after its earnings per share beat views but it was downgraded by analysts at Thomson Reuters/Verus to sell from hold.

As of the open  of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6   of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Wednesday's  trailing P/E ratio is  17.07 down   from Tuesday's trailing P/E of 17.22  (last year it was 14.71);  today's    P/E estimate is  14.13 unchanged from Tuesday's  P/E estimate of 14.13  (year ago it was 12.62) and today's  dividend yield is 2.20 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.18  (last year it was 2.50). The Dow's all-time high was 15,676.94   on September 18, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2361.90 down 20.75  from Monday's closing numerator of 2382.65. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $78.73 down 69 cents from Monday's average closing price of 79.42.  The median closing price of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $74.78 (WMT/HD) down $1.43 from Monday's median closing price of $76.21 (AXP/WMT.  The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was Microsoft.

If  Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $2,074  ($238,265 - $236,190 )  .

MarketWatch 10/15/13 Tues. 4:24 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks tumbled Tuesday on signs of any progress toward a budget deal unraveling, two days before the nation is expected to hit its debt limit. At a news conference held after a closed-door session, House Republican leaders said they were still working to find a way to end the partial government shutdown and raise the debt limit. House Speaker John Boehner said lawmakers were trying to find a bipartisan way forward. As House Republicans worked on an alternative to a bipartisan measure expected from the Senate, NBC News reported Senate budget negotiations had been postponed as senators wait to first see the House GOP plan before proceeding. And, Bloomberg News quoted Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., as saying the discussions had “all fallen apart.”“I can’t imagine anybody wants to get this much closer to the deadline and not move forward with something that is passable,” said Art Hogan, market strategist at Lazard Capital Markets, referring to the expiration of U.S. borrowing authority on hursday.“Someone didn’t get the memo at the House that they can’t attach anything related to the Affordable Care Act, that you’re negotiating over whether or not we should pay or bills as a country by changing a law that has already been put in place,” said Hogan. Fred Dickson, chief investment strategist at Davison Cos., advised clients holding more than the usual level of cash in reserve to “wait until the impasse in Washington concludes before committing cash to new equity positions.” The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.87%  dropped 133.25 points, or 0.9%, to 15,168.01, with Home Depot Inc. HD +0.24%  pacing losses that included 28 of its 30 components.A day after closing at a three-week high, the S&P 500 index SPX -0.71%  fell 12.08 points, or 0.7%, to 1,698.06. Coca-Cola Co. KO -0.66% shares shed 0.7% after the beverage maker reported a rise in third-quarter profit.Johnson & Johnson JNJ +0.54% climbed 0.1% after the provider of health-care products raised its full-year outlook.“The picture emerging from the first big day of the third-quarter reporting cycle today is a mixed one, with weak-looking results from Coca-Cola and Citigroup and a handy beat from Johnson & Johnson. We now have [third-quarter] results from 35 S&P 500 companies,” Sheraz Mian, research director at Zacks Investment Research Inc. in Chicago, noted in emailed commentary. While still early, fourth-quarter earnings estimates have “come down a bit in recent days. And the coming days of estimate cuts could become a more serious headwind for the market than Washington worries,” Mian added. “We see the current federal government partial shutdown as slightly raising fourth-quarter revenue and earnings risk factors, something that we do not see in current stock prices,” said Dickson at Davidson Cos.The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.56%  declined 21.26 points, or 0.6%, to 3,794.01.Shares of Apple Inc. AAPL +0.05%  gained 0.5% after the iPhone maker said it hired Angela Ahrendts, currently chief executive of Burberry Group PLC UK:BRBY -7.63% , to be its new retail chief.  For every stock gaining, more than three fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where 689 million shares traded. In a speech delivered in Mexico City, New York Federal Reserve President William Dudley said the Fed’s large balance sheet would not cause it to change its monetary policy. Also Tuesday, Richard Fisher, president of the Dallas Fed, told Reuters he doubted that the Federal Reserve would cut the pace of its asset-purchase program at its meeting later in the month.
