2/21/14 Fri. am Coke's CFO Steps Down

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,567 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of January 27, 2014  and a summary of Dow 30 components'  recent SEC filings as of January 27, 2014.

A read of the print editions of Friday's  Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg)  yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 16133.23 up 92.67 or 0.58 %  from Wednesday's close of 16040.56.  For the year the Dow is down 2.67%. Of the Dow components   24  gained  and 6     declined. The  biggest gainer dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was  Verizon up $1.59 or 3.42%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Walmart down $1.33 or 1.78%.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2512.20 up 14.43   from  Wednesday's closing numerator of 2497.77. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

WSJ pC4 "S&P 500 inches closer to new high" by Alexandra Scagtgs says US stocks gained broadly propelling the S&P 500 to the brink of another new high, as investors shrugged off a mixed bag of economic reports.  Telecom gains were led by  Verizon after Jefferies analysts said investors shold take advantage of recent weakness in the stock.

FT p21 "Facebook-WhasApp deal puts focus on Blackberry messenger" by Richard Blackden says  the Facebook purchase placed attention on the value of Blackberry's messaging system.

IbD pB2 "Stocks shae weak start; leaders show big cap tilt" by Paul Whitfield says stocks notched small losses in the first half hour Thurs but rebounded nicely as Thursday's action was up in mixed vol and the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

NYT pB8 "Signs of winter slump's end lift shares" by AP says the stock market got a lift Thurs from a couple of encouraging reports that suggested the economy could pick up after a winter slump.

As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5  of Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 15.83 up from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 15.75  (last year it was 15.16).  Friday's P/E estimate is14.25 unchanged from  Thursday's P/E estimate of 14.25  (year ago it was 12.50) and Friday's dividend yield is 2.19 down from Thursday's dividend yield of 2.21  (last year it was 2.54). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $83.74 up 48 cents  from Wednesday's average closing price of $83.26. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $75.65     (HD/NKE) down 88  cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $76.53    (WMT/HD). The lowest volume was Travelers  and the highest volume was GE.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,443  ($251,220 -$249,777).

2/20/14 Thurs. 4:39   pm MarketWatch by Victor Reklaitis says US stocks finished with solid gains on Thursday after a choppy start to the session, shaking off losses that came amid downbeat reports from the Philadelphia Federal Reserve, China and Europe.Traders found encouragement in a gauge of U.S. manufacturing jumping to its highest level in almost four years, as well as in more M&A activity, this time involving Facebook. In addition, strategists said the market’s five-year bull run isn’t ready to end yet.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.58%  rose 92.67 points, or 0.6%, to close at 16,133.23, after showing an intraday gain of more than 100 points. Verizon Communications Inc. VZ +0.23%  fared best among the Dow components, jumping 3.4% after Jefferies analysts said now is a good time to buy Verizon shares. The S&P 500 index SPX +0.60%  tacked on 11.03 points, or 0.6%, to end at 1,839.78, with the telecom sector performing best among S&P sectors. The benchmark index has advanced in eight out of the past 10 sessions, nearing its Jan. 15 record close of 1,848.38.The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.70%  advanced 29.59 points, or 0.7%, to finish at 4,267.55.
“Panic if you must over discussion of a shift in interest rates or use WalMart’s earnings as a barometer for consumer health if you choose,” said Andrew Wilkinson, chief market analyst at Interactive Brokers, in emailed comments on Thursday. There are also “changing probabilities of financial tempest in other parts of the globe” he added. But in the absence of such problems overseas, “the bull is likely to charge unchecked,” Wilkinson said. He also said: “The domestic economy continues to heal nicely and this year will undoubtedly be better than last.”While the S&P 500 has wavered this week as it nears its Jan. 15 record, technical analysts said that’s not surprising. With one trading day left in the holiday-shortened week, the index is essentially flat — up less than 0.1%.Market experts “feel the need to rationalize every retreat in equity prices,” said Sam Stovall, chief equity strategist at S&P Capital IQ, in a note late Wednesday. But the market is actually just “following the traditional pattern required to break above price resistance by making several attempts before that rusty door finally swings open,” Stovall said.
Facebook's $19 billion outlay for WhatsApp isn’t so shocking when considering how investors value WeChat, the rival messaging service of Chinese Internet giant Tencent. The strategist added: “From a technical perspective, the S&P 500 is challenging the January high after recovering more than 100 points from the early February lows, and we continue to anticipate further upside on this run.”In economic news on Thursday, the Philadelphia Federal Reserve’s manufacturing index dropped sharply to a reading of negative 6.3 in February from a 9.4 reading in January, well below a MarketWatch-compiled economist forecast of 7.3.On the upside, Markit’s U.S. flash purchasing managers index jumped to its highest level in almost four years, rising to 56.7 in February. In addition, the number of Americans who applied for unemployment benefits last week edged down by 3,000 to 336,000, indicating little change in the U.S. labor market and roughly meeting expectations, while consumer prices rose a seasonally adjusted 0.1% in January, matching forecasts. In China, a key gauge showed a larger-than-expected contraction for manufacturing in the world’s No. 2 economy, while in Europe, Markit data showed business activity in the euro zone lost momentum in February, owing to weakness in France. On Wednesday, U.S. stocks closed lower after the Federal Reserve’s latest meeting minutes showed no real consensus about when short-term rates would begin to rise.
