http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,575 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of January 27, 2014  and a summary of Dow 30 components'  recent SEC filings as of January 27, 2014.

A  read of the print editions of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal,  Financial Times,   Investor's Business Daily,  New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & Constitution & amp; Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg)   yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 16179.66 down 27.48 or 0.17%  from Monday's close of 16207.14. For the year the Dow is down 2.39% .  Of the Dow components  10  gained, Johnson & Johnson were unchanged  and   18   declined.  The  biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Home Depot up $3.11 or 3.99 %. The biggest decliner dollar-wise    was Goldman Sachs down $3.06 and percentage-wise was Boeing down 2.17%.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2519.43 down 4.28   from  Monday's closing numerator of 2523.71. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

WSJ pC4 "Soft data just a meager drag on the Dow" by Kaitlyn Kiernan says stocks edged lower due to investors largely dismissing the latest in a spate of weak economic data.  The market was focused on news from Home Depot whose 4Q earnings exceeded analyst expectations and JPMorgan saying it will cut 6,000 mortgage jobs.

NYT pB6 "S&P again flirts with highs, then backpedals lower" by Reuters says stocks slipped Tues edging lower.

FT p23 "Tesla hits record on hopes for battery pack gigafactory" by Eric Platt says US equity markets were little changed following weaker than anticipated reports on consumer confidence & regional manufacturing activity.

IBD pB4 "Indexes ease, hold near new highs; leaders solid" by Juan Carlos Arancibia says the stock market slipped Tues sustaining modest losses that did little to derail its upward path.  Tuesday's action saw mild losses as uptrend moderates.  the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

USAT p1B "Chancy stocks boost amrkets" by Matt Krantz says the S&P hung just below a new high Tues following the market's 6% rally from its low this year on 2/3.

As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6  of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 15.91 down from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 15.94    (last year it was 15.39).  Wednesday's P/E estimate is14.50 unchanged from  Tuesday's P/E estimate of 14.50  (year ago it was 12.54) and Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.18 down from Tuesday's dividend yield of 2.20  (last year it was 2.54). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $83.98 down 14 cents  from Monday's average closing price of $84.12. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.11     (PG/DIS) down $1.26  from Monday's median closing price of $77.85    (HD/NKE). If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $428  ($252,371 - $251,943).

2/25/14 Tues. 4:50   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says US stocks finished a choppy trading session lower on Tuesday as gloomy reports on home prices and consumer confidence dampened the mood.
A report on home prices showed a dip in December, with the longer trend indicating a slowdown in price recovery. The U.S. consumer confidence index dropped by more than expected, reflecting lower expectations about the economy.
The S&P 500 SPX -0.14%  closed 2.49 points, or 0.1%, lower at 1,845.12, after briefly topping a previous closing high. Throughout the session, the benchmark index struggled to lift through a key technical level, prompting further selling pressure in the afternoon.
The Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA -0.17%  ended the session 27.48 points, or 0.2%, lower at 16,179.66.
The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.13%  dropped 5.38 points, or 0.1%, to 4,287.59.
The pace of U.S. home-price growth slowed down at the end of 2013, but despite this the year saw the fastest calendar-year price growth in eight years, according to data released Tuesday. “Gains are slowing from month-to-month and the strongest part of the recovery in home values may be over,” said David Blitzer, chairman of the index committee at S&P Dow Jones Indices. “The seasonally adjusted data also exhibit some softness and loss of momentum.” The U.S. consumer confidence index also dipped primarily because Americans are less certain about the economy in the next six months, even though they view the current environment as much improved, the Conference Board said Tuesday.
“There is a struggle between bears and bulls, because a failure to break through the 1,850 level yesterday is a bearish sign,” says JJ Kinahan, chief strategist at TD Ameritrade.
“What was interesting about yesterday’s rally is that it was not reinforced by the 10-year Treasury yields, nor by the Vix index. Bond yields did not move much and the Vix percentage change was not as pronounced,” he added.
Home Depot Inc. HD -1.00%  shares rose 4% after the company reported fiscal fourth-quarter earnings that beat forecasts. The retailer also lifted its dividend 21%.
Macy’s Inc.                         M -1.16%  shares rose 6.1% after the retailer’s fourth-quarter profit beat estimates.
Shares of Zulily Inc.ZU +4.21%  surged 36% after topping earnings expectations.
Tractor Supply Co. /quotes/zigman/56321/delayed/quotes/nls/tsco TSCO -1.10%   share rose 3.6% after the company said it has boosted its stock buyback program by $1 billion in a bid to increase shareholder value.
