Post No. 2,552 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of January 27, 2014 and a summary of Dow 30 components' recent SEC filings as of January 27, 2014. Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 15738.79 down 189.77 or 1.19% from Tuesday's close of 15928.56. Of the Dow components 5 gained and 25 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was DuPont up $1.14 or 1.91%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Boeing down $7.31 or 5.33%.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 15372.80 down 326.05 or 2.08% from Friday's close of 15698.85. Of the Dow components only Pfizer gained and 29 declined. The only and therefore biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Pfizer up 20 cents or 0.66%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was 3M down $.4.29 and percentage-wise was AT&T down 4.11 %.
Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2393.79 down 50.66 from Friday's closing numerator of 2444.45. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 15.09 (last year it was 15.37). Monday's P/E estimate is 14.15 (year ago it was 12.54) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.20 (last year it was 2.50). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.79 down $1.69 from Friday's average closing price of $81.48. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $73.88 (WMT/HD) down $1.89 from Friday's median closing price of $75.77 (WMT/HD). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was GE.
If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $5,066 ($244,445 - $239,379).
2/3//14 Mon. 4:41 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says US stocks market closed with sharp losses on Monday, after
a much weaker-than-expected reading on manufacturing data as well as
concerns over a slowdown in China, triggered the worst selloff in
several months. The S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the day with the steepest decline since June 20.U.S. manufacturers expanded in January
at the slowest rate in eight months as the pace of new orders sharply
decelerated, according to the closely followed ISM index. The Institute
for Supply Management index sank to 51.3% from 56.5% in December. That’s
the lowest level since last May. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had
expected the index to drop to 56%.The S&P 500 index

and it would be interesting to see just how much of it is due to bad
weather,” said Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial.“Investors will be watching the employment data on Friday very keenly,
to see if there is a confirmation that we are somehow entering a soft
patch. As the Fed continues with the tapering, the markets once again
react to bad news negatively and are recalibrating valuations to
economic data and earnings,” Krosby said. The main indexes ended January with the steepest losses in more than a
year, as disappointing data from China -- which triggered selloffs in
emerging-markets currencies over the past two weeks -- and worries over
deflation in the euro zone forced investors to flee equity markets and
seek safer assets. The implied volatility as measured by the CBOE Vix index, which moves
inversely to the S&P 500, jumped 14.6% to 21.09, a level not seen
since Dec. 28 2012, when the markets confronted the fiscal cliff. The 10-year Treasurys rallied, pushing yields to a fresh three-month low. 1/31/14 Fri 5:37 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says US stocks ended the week and the month with deep losses following a selloff on Friday, which was prompted by disappointing earnings, renewed fears over deflation in the euro zone and a continuing rout in emerging markets. Disappointing earnings from Amazon.com Inc. and Mattel Inc. set the downbeat tone early in the session. The S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average finished January with the steepest monthly declines since May 2012.Investors found no solace from U.S. consumer spending data, which showed Americans spent more in December, but their incomes stagnated. The S&P 500 ended the session 11.60 points, or 0.7%, at 1,782.59, and recorded its third weekly decline in a row. The benchmark index lost 0.4% over the week and 3.6% over the month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 149.76 points, or 0.9%, lower at 15,698.85. The blue-chip index, which suffered six triple-digit losses this month, ended the week 1.9% lower and recorded a 5.2% decline for January.
The Nasdaq Composite lost 19.25 points, or 0.5%, to 4,103.88. The tech-heavy index is down 0.6% over the week, its second-straight week of declines and 1.7% lower over the month. Read the recap of our stock market live blog.Stocks endured heavy selling in most of the sessions this week, as sharp drops in emerging-markets currencies prompted nervous investors to flee riskier assets including stocks and lock in profits from a spectacular year.“We can blame the recent pullback on the emerging markets or capital flows, but at the end of the day, it was going to happen anyway because markets rallied a bit too much at the end of last year,” says Jim Russell, senior equity strategist for U.S. Bank Wealth Management.“We would consider this as a buying opportunity. The jury is out on whether stocks will have a bigger correction, but for longer-term our outlook is positive,” he added.

Wal-Mart warned the sales impact from the reduction in the U.S. government food stamps was greater than expected.

Consumer spending rose sharply in December for the second month in a row, but Americans had to dip into their savings to pay for their purchases. The incomes of Americans, however, were unchanged in December and they fell after adjusting for taxes and inflation. Economists polled by MarketWatch had forecast a smaller gain in spending but a slight rise in income.Consumer sentiment, however, declined in January, as weak jobs growth continuing to weigh on consumers, according to Friday reports on a gauge from the University of Michigan and Thomson Reuters. The Chicago PMI fell in January to a still-strong 59.6 from 60.8 in December, but employment weakened for the second straight month. Economists polled by MarketWatch had expected the index, formally known the Chicago business barometer, to decline to 59.8.
