2/7/14 Fri. am Another Boeing 787 Computer Problem

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,559 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of January 27, 2014  and a summary of Dow 30 components'  recent SEC filings as of January 27, 2014.

A read of the print editions of Friday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg)  yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 15628.53 up 188.3 or 1.22%  from Wednesday's close of 15440.23.  For the year the Dow is down 5.72%. Of the Dow components  27   gained  and 3  declined. The  biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Disney up $3.80 or 5.3%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was AT&T up 8 cents 0.25%.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2433.61 up 29.32  from  Wednesday's closing numerator of 2404.29. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

WSJ pC4 "Dow streaks to its best day of year" by Chris Dieterich says the market rallied after a report showed fewer jobless claims than expected.  Coke rose 42 cents on news of its deal with Green Mountain.  Disney rose $3.80 afer reporting better than expected fiscal 1Q rev and earnings.

NYT pB9 "Shares rally to give indexes their best day of the year" & AJC pA13 "Dow, S&P both up 1.2%" by AP says after a rocky start to the week, the major indexes had their biggest gain of the year.

FT p19 "Homebuilders lead advance as Goldman cites supply shortage" by Eric Platt says Goldman Sachs said the homebuilders sector would recover as mortgage rates stabilize US markets rallied as the Dept of Labor reported a sharp decline in initial jobless claims and a report on productivity in the US logged an increase ahead of economic forecasts.

IBD pB2 "Stock indexes roll higher, but volume is fading" by Paul Whitfield says Thursday's action was up in declining volume while the current outlook is the market is in a correction.

As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 15.10 up from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.95  (last year it was 15.38). Friday's P/E estimate is 14.15 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 14.15  (year ago it was 12.54) and Friday's dividend yield is 2.22 down from Thursday's dividend yield of 2.23 (last year it was 2.55). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $81.12 up 98 cents  from Wednesday's average closing price of $80.14. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $74.49     (WMT/HD) up 42 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $74.07    (WMT/HD). The lowest volume was Travelers  and the highest volume was Cisco.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $2,932   ($243,361 - $240,429).

2/6//14 Thurs. 4:19 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says US stocks finished Thursday with best gains in seven weeks as investors welcome a larger-than-expected drop in weekly jobless claims and upbeat earnings from companies including Walt Disney Co.Thursday’s jobless claims data set an optimistic tone for Friday’s non-farm payrolls report due at 8:30 a.m. Eastern. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed near session highs, adding 188.23 points, or 1.2%, to 15,628.46. The S&P 500 closed up 21.78 points, or 1.2%, at 1,773.42. The Nasdaq Composite ended the day 45.57 points, or 1.1%, higher at 4,057.12.
The S&P 500 index SPX +1.24%  closed up 21.78 points, or 1.2%, at 1,773.42. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +1.22%  closed near session highs, adding 188.23 points, or 1.2%, to 15,628.46. Both indexes saw their biggest gains since Dec 18, when the Fed announced the start of tapering. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.14%  ended the day 45.57 points, or 1.1%, higher at 4,057.12.
.“Market pullbacks are normal and we think concerns about emerging markets reminded investors that markets do not always go in a straight line,” said Kate Warne, investment strategist at Edward Jones.
“Apart from a few data points that were disappointing, recent reports have been positive. Earnings have been positive. And the Fed is still rescuing, even as it tries to reduce the support. Considering such a background, it would take some really bad news for stocks to fall dramatically,” Warne added.
Helping the sentiment was the data on initial weekly jobless claims. The number of people who applied for unemployment benefits for the first time fell by 20,000 to 331,000 last week, better than forecasts for 337,000. In other economic news, the U.S. trade deficit widened more than expected and productivity increased slightly less than anticipated. The data come a day after a disappointing report on private-sector jobs growth from ADP and a day ahead of key nonfarm-payroll figures.Across the Atlantic, the ECB left key rates unchanged, and the central bank’s president, Mario Draghi, said at the news conference that medium- and long-term inflation expectations remain well-anchored, with no real deflation risk. The Bank of England, meanwhile, left policy unchanged and its quantitative easing program steady.Earnings results released after the market close on Wednesday and before the opening bell Thursday were mixed.
