2/24/14 Mon. 4:58   pm MarketWatch by Victor Reklaitis says US stocks climbed on Monday, boosted by M&A activity, an upbeat German confidence report and bets that the S&P 500’s foray into new high ground could spur further buying. The main indexes finished with solid gains, although they ended well off their session highs as buying momentum faded. The S&P 500 SPX +0.62%   had been on pace to score a record closing high but didn’t deliver, with gains erased in the last hour of trading. The benchmark index rose 11.46 points, or 0.6%, to finish at 1,847.71 — just below its Jan. 15 record close at 1,848.38. It had been up more than 22 points intraday. Humana Inc. HUM -0.27%   closed up 10.6%, performing best among S&P 500 components. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.65% gained 105.83 points, or 0.7%, to end at 16,209.13, led by UnitedHealth Group Inc. UNH +2.98% , which jumped 3%. Shares in Humana and UnitedHealth, both health insurers, rallied following a JPMorgan note saying Medicare Advantage reimbursements will drop less than expected next yearThe Nasdaq added 29.56 points, or 0.7%, to close at 4,292.97, nabbing its highest close since April 2000.

S&P 500 turns positive for year
“You had a pretty positive number out of Germany,” said Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial, referring to the latest Ifo survey on German business confidence.“The deal flow is also beginning to gain momentum, and that’s very positive for markets,” she added.RF Micro Devices RFMD +21.00% said Monday that it will merge with TriQuint Semiconductor Inc. TQNT +26.11%  in an all-stock deal. RF Micro closed up 21%, while TriQuint surged 26%.Jos. A. Bank JOSB +9.06%  shares rose 9.1% after Men’s Wearhouse Inc. MW +7.54%  upped its offer for its rival to $63.50 a share. The amended offer is conditioned on Jos. A. Bank terminating its recent agreement to buy Eddie Bauer. Men’s Wearhouse shares rose 7.5%.Monday’s deal news follows other recent M&A events, including Facebook Inc.’s FB +0.23%   purchase of WhatsApp, Comcast Corp.’s CMCSA +0.02%  plan to buy Time Warner Cable Inc. TWC -0.98%   and Actavis PLC’s ACT +1.81%  agreement to buy Forest Laboratories Inc. FRX -0.36%
Krosby said the announced deals can have a “halo effect,” spurring some investors to think they’re going to see more deals in other sectors. Some market analysts have said they see limited gains for stocks in the near term, citing resistance for the S&P 500 as the benchmark index trades around its record level.
“Every time you get to these levels there’s always a back and forth,” Krosby told MarketWatch. She said at some point, something will push the S&P 500 to a new record close, or it won’t be able to break out.

2/21/14 Fri. 5:03   pm MarketWatch by Victor Reklaitis says US stocks stepped lower Friday and finished mostly down for the week, as the S&P 500 snapped a two-week winning streak that’s left it just below a record level.Stocks spent most of the session in modestly positive territory, but those gains faded by day’s end. The S&P 500 SPX -0.19%  dipped 3.53 points, or 0.2%, to close at 1,836.25, as telecoms fared worst and consumer discretionary performed best. The benchmark index lost 0.1% for the week, putting it 0.7% below its Jan. 15 record close of 1,848.38.The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.19%  shed 29.93 points, or 0.2%, to finish at 16,103.30. Nike Inc. NKE -0.25% and Walt Disney Co. DIS -0.09%  both gained 1.2% to lead the Dow, while Verizon Communications Inc. VZ -1.77%  fell 1.8% for the worst performance among blue chips. The Dow dipped 0.3% for the week, also halting a two-week winning streak. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.10%  edged down 4.13 points, or 0.1%, to close at 4,263.41. But the tech-laden index still finished up 0.5% for the week — its third straight weekly gain. The Mobile World Congress promises to break news of several new phones, including a first look at the Samsung S5.Stocks have been bouncing back from a slump in late January and early February, as investors lately look past a number of disappointing economic reports, attributing them to the particularly bad winter weather that’s hit much of the U.S. On Friday, existing-home sales in January showed a bigger-than-expected decline, but unusually poor weather may have played a role, the National Association of Realtors said.
But there is a challenge presented by how stock investors have reacted to weak data, according to Steven Wieting, global chief investment strategist for Citi Private Bank.Markets “that have looked over the valley to a stronger period of U.S. growth ahead, may not have to ‘tilt up’ when that recovery from weather-related weakness becomes apparent,” Wieting said in a client note on Friday.Nonetheless, Citi Private Bank still predicts moderate gains for U.S. stocks. Wieting said his bank’s “expectation for a roughly 7% gain in U.S. market earnings per share, low interest rates and growing dividends leaves us expecting further U.S. market gains, if more modest than 2013.”In other economic news on Friday, Dallas Federal Reserve President Richard Fisher said the central bank should continue to taper its bond-buying program that’s boosted stocks.
“There wasn’t that much news. Basically what we saw was typical volatility on options expirations,” said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital. Monthly options expirations were on the calendar. When the S&P 500 couldn’t punch through to a new 52-week high earlier Friday, that might have invited some selling, Cardillo added. But overall, the holiday-shortened week “wasn’t bad” and Friday’s market action wasn’t a “game changer,” he said. Among individual stocks, Groupon Inc. GRPN +0.87%  slid 22% after the daily-deals company late Thursday delivered a disappointing outlook.Hewlett-Packard Co. HPQ -0.30%  fell 1.3%, as the PC and printers maker cut short an early rally on its upbeat quarterly results.Priceline.com Inc. PCLN -0.06%  climbed 2.5% after the online travel broker late Thursday reported fourth-quarter results that exceeded expectations. In other financial markets on Friday, European stock markets closed higher, following a mostly upbeat session in Asia . Metals prices rose, while oil prices suffered. The dollar dipped against major rivals.
