2/27/14 Thurs. am Boeing Black SmartPhone will Self Destruct

Post No. 2,577 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of Dow 30 components'  recent SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal,  Financial Times,   Investor's Business Daily,  New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & Constitution & amp; Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg)   yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 16198.41 up 18.75 or 0.12%  from Tuesday's close of 16179.66 .  For the year the Dow is down 2.28%. Of the Dow components   17  gained, Johnson & Johnson was unchanged  and  12    declined.  The  biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Walmart up $1.43 or 1.95%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise    was  Verizon down $1 and percentage-wise was McDonald's down 0.76%.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2522.35 up 2.92   from  Tuesday's closing numerator of 2519.43. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks nudge higher" by Alexandra Scaggs says US stock benchmarks closed slightly higher although for a 3rd straight session the S&P failed to hold in record closing territory.

FT p21 "Wall Street" by Eric Platt says US equities rose moderately as better than expected new home sales counterbalanced recent weak housing figures.

IBD pB2 "Small caps lead the day as Nasdaq shows stalling" by David Saito-Chung says large cap stocks had trouble holding on to early gains Wed yet small caps moved higher as Wednesday's action saw indexes inch higher in mixed vol & the current outlook is still a confirmed uptrend.

NYT pB5 "Growth uncertainties leave markets flat" by AP says for a 3rd straight day the S&P traded above its high closing mark but fell back to end below it.

AJC pA13 "S&P at record then retreats" by AP says for a 3rd straight day the S&P traded above its record close but failed to hold on to its gains.

As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5  of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 15.93 up from Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio of 15.91    (last year it was 15.59).  Thursday's P/E estimate is 14.50 unchanged from  Wednesday's P/E estimate of 14.50  (year ago it was 12.54) and Thursday's dividend yield is 2.18 unchanged from Wednesday's dividend yield of 2.20  (last year it was 2.51). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $84.08 up 11 cents  from Tuesday's average closing price of $83.93. The median closing price of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.25     (NIKE/DIS) up 14 cents  from Tuesday's median closing price of $79.11    (PG/DIS). The lowest volume was Travelers  and the highest volume was Verizon  .

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $292  ($252,235 - $251,943).

2/26/14 Wed. 4:45   pm MarketWatch by Victor Reklaitis and Anora Mahmudova says US stocks finished a choppy trading session on Wednesday marginally higher, having pared most of the gains following a better-than-expected report on new home sales.
The S&P 500 index /quotes/zigman/3870025/realtime SPX +0.00%  has topped the 1,850 level in each of the past three sessions, but again failed to hold above that level into the bell. The benchmark index traded in and out of positive territory in the last hour of trading and closed virtually unchanged at 1,845.16.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.12% ended the session 18.75 points, or 0.1%, higher at 16,198.41, with nearly two thirds of its components ending higher. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.10%  closed 4.48 points, or 0.1%, higher at 4,292.06.
Earlier, stocks got a boost from a new-home sales report, which showed a 9.6% increased in sales in January to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 468,000 above forecasts for 405,000.
The housing report was a “bit of good economic data” that’s “flying in the face” of recent weak economic reports that have been blamed on bad weather , said Ryan Detrick, senior technical strategist at Schaeffer’s Investment Research.
He told MarketWatch that the week is somewhat light on market-moving headlines, so traders are focused on the S&P 500 “continuing to pound on the 1,850 area.” The index eventually will break through, he said, noting that March and April historically have been the S&P 500’s two best months. In the last 20 years, March and April on average have delivered returns of 1.52% and 2.19%, respectively, topping all other months, according to Schaeffer’s data.
On the other hand, Jonathan Krinsky, chief market technician at MKM Partners, said he sees U.S. equities in a “stalemate” following their move up from their lows in early February.
The past two weeks “have largely been a consolidation for U.S. equities,” Krinsky wrote in a note on Wednesday. ”Looking objectively at the Bull and Bear arguments, we see no clear edge for the SPX in the near-term. This likely means more frustration for both Bulls and Bears.” In other markets, it was a choppy day in Asia , with the Nikkei 225 JP:NIK -0.54%  closing down 0.5% and the Hong Kong Hang Seng HK:HSI +0.54% index gaining 0.5%. European stocks were in the red with the Stoxx 600 XX:SXXP -0.20%  pulling back from a six-year high reached in the prior session. Gold fell, while oil prices advanced, and the dollar rose against the euro and the yen.
Among individual stocks, Target Corp.TGT +7.04% jumped 7% as investors cheered its fourth-quarter report, while rival Wal-Mart WMT +0.13%  rose 2% amid news that its Sam’s Club business was testing an online subscription service as the threat from Inc. AMZN +0.41%  grows.
Lowe’s Companies LOW +5.43%  shares rallied 5.2% after No. 2 home-improvement retailer announced a gain in fourth-quarter profit and additional share buybacks.
Newfield Exploration Company NFX +7.33%  shares jumped 7.3% after the company’s fourth-quarter results beat estimates.
Shares in J.C. Penney JCP +9.40%  rose 4% in aftermarket following the retailer’s quarterly results. The company swung into profit in the fourth quarter and an adjusted loss was less than expected.
On the downside, First Solar Inc. FSLR -0.08%  dropped 9.1% after the company reported quarterly earnings late Tuesday that fell well short of Wall Street forecasts.
