http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,687 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Wednesday at 16843.88 down 102.04 or 0.60% from Tuesday's close of 16945.92. Of the Dow components  4  gained and    26 declined.   The biggest gainer dollar-wise   was Exxon up 49 cents and percentage-wise was Merck up 0.55%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was   Boeing $3.15 or 2.3%.

As of the open of  the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.57 unchanged from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.57 (last year it was 16.52).  Wednesday's P/E estimate is 15.13 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 15.13 (year ago it was 13.75) and Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.15 unchanged from Tuesday's dividend yield of 2.15 (last year it was 2.39). The Dow's all-time high was 16,945.92 on June1-10,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2622.77 down 15.98  from  Tuesday's   numerator of 2638.75.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $87.43 down 53 cents from Tuesday's  average closing price of $87.96.  The median closing price of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $80.19   (HD/PG) down 26 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $80.45 (PG/HD). The lowest volume was  3M and the highest volume was Cisco.

If  Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,598   ($263,875 - $262,277).

6/11/14 Wednesday 4:40    pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says  The U.S. stock market fell on Wednesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average snapping a five-day winning streak and retreating from the record level reached on Tuesday.
The blue-chip index DJIA -0.60% , which was only 54 points from reaching the 17,000 level after Tuesday’s close, was set back after falling 102.04 points, or 0.6% to 16,883.88.
                            DJIA 16,843.88, -102.04, -0.60%         The S&P 500                        SPX -0.35%  closed 6.90 points, or 0.4%, lower at 1,943.89.
The Nasdaq CompositeCOMP -0.14%  ended the day down 6.07 points, or 0.1% at 4,331.93.                                   Weighing on sentiment was a report from the World Bank, which cut a global growth forecast, saying that the harsh winter in the U.S. and a conflict between Russian and Ukraine dragged growth in the U.S. and Europe during the first quarter.   Robert Zagunis, managing director and portfolio manager at Jensen Investment Management, said that the current environment of steady growth and low inflation is still favorable to stocks.
“While as a whole, markets have seen incremental changes, individual companies are seeing adjustments. Companies with stronger balance sheets and good earnings will continue to do well,” Zagunis said.
Earnings releases sparked some action in individual stocks.
H&R Block HRB +4.62%  shares rallied 4.6% after fiscal fourth-quarter profit and revenue jumped as a late start to the tax reason pulled revenue into the tax-services provider’s latest quarter. Shares of U.S. airline companies were hit, following a profit warning for both 2014 and 2015 by Deutsche Lufthansa AGDE:LHA -13.87% .
Delta Air Lines Inc. DAL -2.89%  fell 2.9%, American Airlines Group Inc.AAL -3.14% dropped 3.1% and United Continental Holdings Inc.UAL -5.23% lost 5.2%.
Ulta Salon Cosmetics & Fragrance Inc. ULTA +13.83%  shares surged 14% after the company posted gains in earnings and sales late Tuesday.
Across other markets, European stocks XX:SXXP -0.56%  closed lower. Asian stocks didn’t provide much buying impetus either, with Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index HK:HSI -0.25%  falling 0.3% after two straight days of gains.
Oil futures settled with a slight gain on Wednesday as a cut to a global growth forecast offset support from a bigger-than-expected decline in weekly U.S. crude supplies.
Gold futures settled higher for a third session in a row Wednesday, modestly extending a rise above $1,260 an ounce as optimism over global growth prospects took a hit and equities gave back some gains from their record run.
The dollar fell against major rivals Wednesday, pushing below 102 yen.

6/10/14 Tuesday 4:09    pm MarketWatch by Victor Reklaitis Anora Mahmudova says the U.S. stock market picked up steam in late trading on Tuesday and finished the session marginally higher.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average eked out its 10th record close this year. The S&P 500 finished near record levels, after trading in a narrow range amid lower-than-usual volumes.
The S&P 500 SPX -0.03%   closed less than a point lower at 1,950.80, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.02%   added 2.82 points to 16,945.92.                             COMP 4,338.00, +1.75, +0.04%

No top-tier economic reports were on the calendar for Tuesday, although the Labor Department said job openings increased in April, and the Commerce Department said wholesale inventories gained 1.1%.
While some market watchers have worried lately about low volatility, weak trading volumes and complacency among investors, stocks have continued to show strength, with the S&P 500 up 5.5% for the year to date as of Tuesday’s close.
Jim Russell, senior equity strategist at U.S. Bank Wealth Management, said that markets had been modestly overbought and expected a slight pullback or a sideways trade in the next few days.
Russell does not see volatility as necessarily low: “Vix is not the only measure we look at. We view it as less representative of volatility because of an increased number of bets around it, such as Vix derivatives.”
“There is far more volatility internally on the S&P 500 than the Vix is showing right now, as the average stock has not reached the same highs as the index,” he added.
Katie Stockton, BTIG’s chief technical strategist, said she expects a pullback on Tuesday, but doesn’t see it lasting long.
“We expect the pullback to be shallow and short-lived,” Stockton wrote in a note. In the short term, she said “overbought conditions are widespread,” but there are “very few reasons to be bearish from an intermediate-term trend-following standpoint, which we would keep in mind as the major indices take pause.”
Among individual stocks,    RSH -10.39%  dived 10% after the struggling electronics retailer reported a wider first-quarter loss than expected.
Shares of eBay Inc. EBAY +0.10% dropped 2.7% after the online marketplace said late Monday that its PayPal chief is leaving the company to join Facebook Inc.                        FB -0.05% . Facebook shares climbed 4.6%.
