6/5/14 Thursday 4:24    pm MarketWatch by Victor Reklaitis says the ECB announced a negative rate on reserves that banks park at the central bank, in a widely expected move, but it also revealed several other measures aimed at boosting inflation and encouraging lending in the euro zone.
In U.S. economic news, a report on weekly jobless claims roughly matched forecasts.
The S&P 500 /SPX +0.65%  rose 12.58 points, or nearly 0.7%, to end at 1,940.46, shaking off a mid-morning decline. The benchmark scored an all-time closing high for the 17th time this year, after nabbing its 16th record close on Wednesday.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average                DJIA +0.59%  gained 98.58 points, or 0.6%, to finish at 16,836.11. The blue-chip index also achieved a record close, and both the Dow and S&P 500 had their biggest gains since May 21 — more than two weeks ago.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.05%  advanced by 44.58 points, or nearly 1.1%, to end at 4,296.23, closing at levels last seen in late March.
The small-cap Russell 2000RUT +2.01%  climbed 22.72 points, or 2%, to finish at 1,153.94, ending at levels last seen in late April. The ECB cut its deposit facility to negative 0.10% from 0% and dropped its main lending rate to 0.15% from 0.25%. The central bank also announced preparations toward the purchase of asset-backed securities. The Stoxx Europe 600XX:SXXP +0.42%  closed up 0.4%.
“The package is immediately significant,” said Citi Private Bank strategists in a note Thursday.
In the U.S., weekly jobless claims rose to 312,000, essentially in line with expectations of 311,000.
On Friday, investors will get the U.S. government’s May jobs report. Economists are expecting a rise of 210,000 jobs in May, but there is a little trepidation after private-sector payrolls disappointed on Wednesday, showing the slowest pace of jobs growth in four months.
Some strategists remain upbeat as U.S. stocks keep climbing.
“The uptrend still has the support of positive short-term momentum, although a pullback still appears likely in the days ahead,” said Katie Stockton, BTIG’s chief technical strategist, in emailed comments on Thursday. “We believe any weakness should be viewed as an opportunity to accumulate stocks, given widespread breakouts and healthy global breadth.”
Hedge-fund manager David Tepper, who sounded notably cautious last month, told CNBC Thursday that the ECB has helped soothe his biggest market worries .
Stock bulls also have gotten another boost from S&P Capital IQ. The research firm’s Investment Policy Committee — which has been upbeat on U.S. stocks — raised its 12-month target for the S&P 500 to 2,100 late Wednesday, up 9% from its prior target of 1,985.
Among individual stocks, Sprint Corp.                         S +0.44%  closed down 4% on news the wireless carrier is nearing a deal to buy rival T-Mobile US Inc.TMUS -2.30% for $40 a share. T-Mobile dropped 2.3%.
Joy Global Inc. /JOY +6.66%   fared best among S&P 500 stocks, rising 6.7% after its quarterly earnings topped expectations. PVH Corp. PVH -8.10%   performed worst, losing 8.1% after it warned of pressure on its profit margins.
In other markets, August gold GCQ4 +0.72%  gained ground, while Asian equities finished largely flat, outside of a 0.8% rise for the Shanghai Composite CN:SHCOMP +0.79% .

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Wednesday at 16737.53 up 15.19 or 0.09% from Tuesday's close of 16722.34. For the year the Dow is up 0.97%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  was United Technologies down 68 cents and percentage-wise was  GE down 0.9%.

WSJ pC4 "S&P 500 finishes at another record high" by Alexandra Scaggs says US stocks advanced pushing the S&P to another record finish despite a mixed bag of economic news.  UnitedHealth added 63 cents after it increased its quarterly dividend by 34% to 37.5 cents a share and renewed its share buyback program which authorizes it to repurchase 100 mil shares.

IBD pB2 "Nasdaq leads mild rally; chip index up 14$ in '14" by David Saito-Chung says the S&P marched to its 8th gain in 10 sessions Wed & notched a fresh all time high.  The current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

FT p21 "wall street" by Eric Platt says US equities shifted higher Wed after declining marginally a day earlier.

NYT p9 "Shares rise as investors await news on rates and jobs" & AJC pA17 "US stocks edge higher" by AP say stocks rose modestly Wed erasing an early decline as investors waited to hear from the Europe's central bank meeting regarding interest rates.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2606.30 up 2.37  from  Tuesday's   numerator of 2603.93.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.88 up 8 cents from Tuesday's  average closing price of $86.80.  The median closing price of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $80.52   (UNH/HD) up 22 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $80.30 (PG/HD). The lowest volume was  3M  and the highest volume was AT&T.

If  Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $237  ($260,630 - $260,393).

6/4/14 Wednesday 4:24    pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says the U.S. stock market ended Wednesday with modest gains that sent the benchmark S&P 500 index to a record level for the 16th time this year. A mixed bag of economic reports sent shares lower in early trade, but investors appeared to have shrugged them off by the afternoon.
Private-sector hiring slowed in May, and April’s outsize gains were revised down. The trade deficit jumped in April to a two-year high, above expectations, while productivity in the first quarter declined sharply due to harsh winter.
The only encouraging report on Wednesday came from the Institute for Supply Management, which reported that the service sector activity heated up last month, with the closely watched index jumping to the highest level in 9 months. The S&P 500 closed near session highs, up 3.62 points, or 0.2%, at 1,927.86. The Dow Jones Industrial Average  rose 15.19 points, or 0.1%, to 16,737.53. The Nasdaq Composite ended the day up 17.56 points, or 0.4%, at 4,251.64.
“The outlook for the US economy continues to improve, as the rebound in economic activity is showing up across the sectors,” wrote Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital.
“The setting of new records on a daily basis for the Dow and S&P suggest a summer higher trading range is unfolding. On the other hand, from a technical perspective, the market may be overly complacent and small pullbacks should be expected as the bull trend remains in place,” Cardillo wrote.
Private-sector employers added 179,000 jobs in May, Automatic Data Processing Inc. reported Wednesday. The number was below the expected gain of 210,000.
The U.S. trade deficit surged in April to a two-year high, while U.S. productivity in the first quarter declined at a sharp annual rate — the worst in six years, due to an unusually harsh winter.
On the bright side, growth picked up last month for the U.S. service sector and non-manufacturing companies, with the index tracking the activity rising to the highest reading since August.
Separately, the Federal reserve reported that most regions of the U.S. are continuing to grow at a “modest” and “moderate” pace. The so-called Beige Book found rising consumer spending, healthy manufacturing, but a wobbling residential real estate sector.
Hovnanian Enterprises Inc. shares fell 2.2% Wednesday after reporting second-quarter earnings that fell short of expectations.
In deal news, Protective Life Corp. shares jumped 18% after Japan’s Dai-ichi Life Insurance Co.  said it plans to buy the U.S.-based life insurer for $5.7 billion.
First Solar Inc.   is one of the biggest gainers today in the S&P 500, rising 3.9%. SunPower Corp  is up 7%. U.S. solar companies likely are getting a lift from a U.S. government move that could hurt their Chinese competitors.A 1.1% rise in Apple Inc.   shares helped Nasdaq Composite higher.
In other markets, most Asian equities fell, taking their cue from losses in U.S. stocks Tuesday. In Europe, the benchmark Stoxx Europe 600  closed nearly flat.
