http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,690 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of Friday's Wall Street Journal, Financial Times,  Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg)  yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Thursday at 16734.19  down 109.69 or 0.65% from Wednesday's close of 16843.88. For the year the Dow is up 1%. Of the Dow components 6   gained and  24   declined.   The biggest gainer dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Chevron up 93 cents o r0.74%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was  Caterpillar down $2.04 or 1.88%.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks tumble again amid Iraq fighting" by Chris Dieterich says the Dow posted its 2nd triple digit decline in a row as fighting in Iraq sent oil prices surging.

NYT pB4 "Market falls sharply on tepid economic news and strife in Iraq" & AJC pA17 "Iraq turmoil hurts market" by AP says a combo of so so economic news & violence in Irag pushed the stock market lower Thurs.

FT p21 "Wall Street" by Eric Platt, Jennifer Bissell says US equities were weaker and US airline stocks continued on a turbulent decline as sectarian violence across Iraq sent crude oil prices to a 3 month high.

IBD pB2 "Bears slap stock indexes; Nasdaq loses clean slate" by Pual Whitfield says  bears came out in force for the first tie in more than 3 weeks as Thursday's action was down in rising vol and the current outlook is confirmed uptrend.

As of the open of  the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.37 down from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.48 (last year it was 16.58).  Friday's P/E estimate is 15.13 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 15.13 (year ago it was 13.75) and Friday's dividend yield is 2.18 up from Thursday's dividend yield of 2.17 (last year it was 2.41). The Dow's all-time high was 16,945.92 on June1-10,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2605.78 down 16.99  from  Wednesday's   numerator of 2622.77.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.86 down 57 cents from Wednesday's  average closing price of $87.43.  The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.60   (UNH/PG) down 59 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $80.19 (HD/PG). The lowest volume was  Visa and the highest volume was Intel.

If  Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,699   ($262,277- $260,578).

6/12/14 Thursday 4:28    pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says the U.S. stock market fell on Thursday, as a spike in oil prices and softer-than-expected economic data dented sentiment on Wall Street.
As unrest in Iraq intensified, concerns over supply sent crude oil prices soaring. While energy companies benefited from higher oil prices, airline companies were hit hard.
Economic data came in below analysts’ forecast, weighing on sentiment. Weekly jobless claims ticked up, rather than the slight drop that was expected. Retail sales in May rose by less than forecast; however, the increase in April was revised sharply upward.

The S&P 500SPX -0.71%  fell for the third straight session, closing 13.77 points, or 0.7%, lower at 1,930.12.
The Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA -0.65%  built on Wednesday’s losses and finished 109.69 points, or 0.7%, lower at 16,734.19. The last time the blue-chip index fell for two consecutive sessions was almost a month ago.
The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.79%  ended the day down 34.30 points, or 0.8% at 4,297.63.
Joe Peta, managing director at Novus, a financial technology company, said that economic data, even when it meets expectations, is not good enough.
“Wall Street’s expectations for growth acceleration in the second half of the year are too optimistic and we are just not seeing that in data so far,” Peta said.
The number of Americans who applied for unemployment benefits last week increased slightly but remained near a post-recession bottom, indicating little change in a gradually improving U.S. labor market.
Sales at U.S. retailers rose last month on strong demand for cars, trucks and home-improvement products, but spending tapered off at many other retailers after a big bump in demand in April.
In corporate news, shares of Lululemon Athletica Inc. LULU +0.27% slumped 16% after the maker of high-end yoga gear lowered its outlook for the year and reported a drop in profit for the first quarter.
Restoration Hardware Holdings Inc. RH +0.21%  surged 13% after the upscale home-furnishing retailer late Wednesday reported it swung to first-quarter profit from a loss a year ago.
Land’s End Inc.LE -0.02%  shares rallied 8.2% after the retailer said profit rose nearly 50% in its first quarter as an independent company after being spun off from Sears Holdings Corp. SHLD +0.44%
Shares in airline companies, hit badly on Wednesday following a profit warning from Deutsche Lufthansa AG, tumbled again on Thursday because of higher oil prices. Delta Air Lines, Inc DAL -0.14%  dropped 5.4%. Southwest Airlines Co. LUV +0.66%  fell 4.5%, American Airlines Group, Inc. AAL -0.92%   lost 4.9%.
Energy companies, which also tend to react to price swings in oil, rallied on Thursday. Denbury Resources Inc DNR +1.90%  was up 1.9%, Chesapeake Energy Corporation CHK +1.53%   rose 1.5%.
In other financial markets, Asian stocks closed mostly lower , while European equities                        XX:SXXP +0.03%  finished little changed. Gold GCQ4 -0.01%  rose.
Crude oil futures topped $106 a barrel on Thursday, with the U.S. benchmark marking its highest close in almost nine months as unrest in Iraq intensified, raising concerns about potential disruptions to the nation’s oil supplies.
