6/4/14 Wed Disney Wants Ratings for Delayed TV Viewing

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,676 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 5/30/14 and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings as of 5/30/14.

A  read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall Street Journal,  Financial Times,  Investor's  Business Daily,  New York Times, USA Today,; Atlanta Journal & Constitution  & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Tuesday at 16722.34 down 21.29 or 0.13% from Monday's close of 16743.63. For the year the Dow is up 0.88%. Of the Dow components  11 gained and  19 declined.   The biggest gainer dollar-wise   Was Goldman Sachs up $1.77 and percentage-wise was Intel up 1.47%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  was Visa down $2.20 and percentage-wise was  Nike down 1.53%.

IBD pB4 "Indexes decline modestly remain in a tight range" by Juan Carlos Arancibia says stocks edged lower Tues but the major indexes kept holding tightly to their recent gains as the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

NYT pB9 "Wall St. ends flat, awaiting jobs report" & AJC pA13 "Hillshire bidding war grows" by AP says the stock market fell slightly Tues pulling back from record highs the day before.

WSJ pC4 "US stocks edge back from string of record highs" by Tomi Kilgore says US stocks edged lower Tues with the S&P failing to close at a record high for the first time in 4 sessions.

As of the open of  the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.36 down from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.38 (last year it was 16.58).  Wednesday's P/E estimate is 14.91 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 14.91 (year ago it was 14.05) and Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.18 unchanged from Tuesday's dividend yield of 2.18 (last year it was 2.35). The Dow's all-time high was 16,743.63 on June 2,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2603.93 down 6.32  from  Monday's   numerator of 2607.25.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.80 down 11 cents from Monday's  average closing price of $86.91.  The median closing price of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $80.30   (PG/HD) down 30 cents from Monday's median closing price of $80.60 (PG/HD). The lowest volume was  Travelers  and the highest volume was Cisco.

If  Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $632  ($260,725 - $260,393).

6/3/14 Tuesday 4:29    pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says the the U.S. stock market ended Tuesday marginally lower, pausing after three straight days of gains that sent the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average to record levels on Monday.
Investors found little comfort in a factory orders report, which was mostly in line with expectations, and better-than-expected monthly car sales.
The S&P 500 SPX -0.04%  closed less than a point lower at 1,924.24. The Dow industrialsDJIA -0.13%  shed 21.29 points, or 0.1%, to 16,722.34.
The Nasdaq CompositeCOMP -0.07%  ended the day down 3.12 points, or 0.1%, at 4,234.08.
Rob Stein, CEO of Astor Investment Management, said that stocks and long-term government bonds are most likely priced where they should be.
“The economy is growing very slowly, but still growing. The S&P 500 is up about 4% on the year and that is consistent with the current growth environment,” Stein said.
“The 10-year yield at 2.5% is not surprising given that the inflation is at 1%, unemployment in 6s and stalled growth in the first quarter. In fact, we fear slipping into a deflationary environment more than inflation rising,” he added.
Orders for goods produced in U.S. factories rose 0.7% in April, the Commerce Department said Tuesday. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had expected orders to rise 0.6%. Factory orders climbed by a revised 1.5% in March, compared with a prior estimate of 0.9%. Orders for durable goods -- products meant to last at least three years -- rose 0.6% in April. Orders for nondurable goods increased 0.7%.
The auto industry was in focus after car makers released their monthly sales figures.
Shares in General Motors Co. GM +0.03%  and Ford Motors Co.                              +0.67%   rose 1.1% and 0.7% respectively after they released their monthly car sales in the U.S.
GM said U.S. vehicle sales were up 12.6% in May, marking its best monthly performance since August 2008, The Wall Street Journal reported. The results topped analyst expectations.
Ford Motor Co. reported a 3% rise in sales in May. Chrysler Group LLC, owned by Fiat, reported 17% growth in sales in May, as its Jeep and Ram brands continued to deliver strong results.
In deal news, shares of Hillshire Brands Co. HSH -0.58%   jumped 9.5% after Pilgrim’s Pride raised its offer to buy the company for $55 a share in cash, valuing the deal at $7.7 billion. Pilgrim’s Pride said the new bid represents an increase of $1.3 billion from its initial offer. Hillshire said it would talk separately with Pilgrim’s Pride and Tyson Foods Inc. TSN +1.55% , both of which are interested in buying the maker of Jimmy Dean sausages and Sara Lee desserts.
