6/8/14 Sun Apple Could Replace Cisco or Intel on Dow

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,681 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of Monday's  Barron's & Investor's Business Daily; the combined Sat/Sun issued of the Wall Street Journal &  Financial Times; & Sunday's  New York Times &  Atlanta Journal & Constitution   yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Friday at 16924.28 up 88.17 or 0.52% from Thursday's close of 16826.11.  For the week was up 207 points or 1.2% . For the year the Dow is up 2.1%.  Of the Dow components  21  gained and 9    declined.   The biggest gainer dollar-wise   was Goldman Sachs up $3.61 and percentage-wise was American Express up 2.27%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was  Travelers down 61 cents or 0.64%.

IBD pB8 "Stocks rise in slow trade; breakouts keep emerging" by Paul Whitfield says stocks advanced for a 3rd day in a row Fri as the Nasdaq posted its 4th straight weekly gain.  Friday's action was up in lower volume and the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

As of the open of  the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6 of  Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.54 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.47 (last year it was 16.66).  Monday's P/E estimate is 15.13 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 14.91 (year ago it was 13.75) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.16 down from Thursday's dividend yield of 2.17 (last year it was 2.43). The Dow's all-time high was 16,924.28 on June 6,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2635.38  up 13.73  from  Thursday's   numerator of 2621.65.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $87.85 up 46 cents from Thursday's  average closing price of $87.39.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $80.24   (PG/HD) down 28 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $80.24 (PG/HD). The lowest volume was 3M  and the highest volume was Intel.

If  Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,373  ($263,538 - $262,165 - $260,630).

6/6/14 Friday 4:26    pm MarketWatch by Victor Reklaitis & William L. Watts says U.S. stocks rallied further into record territory Friday after a solid jobs report, leaving the S&P 500 and Dow industrials with their strongest weekly performances since mid-April while the previously pummeled small-cap Russell 2000 index turned positive for the year.
The S&P 500 SPX +0.46%  advanced 8.98 points or 0.4%, to 1,949.44, notching its 18th record close of the year and its third straight record finish. The benchmark index advanced 1.3% for the week, marking its strongest weekly percentage rise since April 17.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.52%  rose 88.17 points, or 0.5%, to 16,924.28, giving the blue-chip index its second straight record close and a 1.2% weekly gain. It has notched eight closing records so far this year. The Dow’s weekly rise was also its strongest since April 17. The S&P 500 and the Dow have each seen three straight weekly gains.
The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.59%  jumped 25.17 points, or 0.6%, to 4,321.40. The tech-heavy index posted its fourth straight weekly advance, gaining 1.8% from last Friday’s close and trading at levels last seen in late March.
The Russell 2000 RUT +0.98%  was up 11.23 points, or 0.9%, at 1,165.17, putting the small-cap index on track for a 2.7% weekly gain. After serving as Wall Street’s whipping boy this spring, the index on Friday turned barely positive for the year—up 0.1%. Analysts had worried in mid-May that the drop by more economically sensitive small caps would spread to the broader market, but the Russell 2000 has ended up finding a bottom and rallying. The U.S. economy added 217,000 jobs in May, and the unemployment rate held steady at 6.3%, the Labor Department said Friday. Economists polled by MarketWatch had expected a gain of 210,000, with the unemployment rate rising to 6.4% from 6.3% in April.
In the wake of Friday’s jobs report, investors “seem to believe that there is no reason to rip up the script,” said Andrew Wilkinson, chief market analyst at Interactive Brokers, in emailed comments. “Monetary stimulus is likely to remain evident even as the taper-countdown goes on, which means that bond yields are likely to remain low thus underpinning the rally in equity prices to fresh record highs.”
On Thursday, the S&P 500 and Dow industrials both nabbed their best gains since May 21, helped by the European Central Bank announcing a raft of stimulus measures.
Among individual stocks on Friday, Hertz Global Holdings Inc. HTZ -9.05%  fell more than 9% after the car-rental company said it would have to restate and correct its results from 2011 through 2013.
Bank of America Corp. /quotes/zigman/190927/delayed/quotes/nls/bac BAC +1.04%  drew attention after The Wall Street Journal reported the bank is in talks to pay a fine of at least $12 billion to settle probes tied to toxic mortgages. Shares rose 1%.
E-Trade Financial Corp. ETFC +4.38% was among top gainers in the S&P 500, rising 4.4% after reportedly drawing an upbeat note from Nomura Securities analysts, who backed their buy rating.
In other markets, European stocks continued to push higher after the Stoxx Europe 600 XX:SXXP +0.67%  closed at the highest level in six years on Thursday, driven by the ECB’s moves. Asian stocks finished largely mixed on Friday, with the wait for U.S. jobs data keeping a lid on the action. September gold GCZ4 -0.02%  edged lower, while July oil CLN4 -0.01%  managed a small rise.
