Post No. 2,696 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Tuesday at 16808.49 up 27.48 or 0.16% from Monday's close of 16781.01. Of the Dow components  15  gained and  15   declined.   The biggest gainer dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Goldman Sachs up $2.37  or 1.43%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Johnson & Johnson down 52 cents or 0.51%.

As of the open of  the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of  Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.41 unchanged from Monday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.41 (last year it was 16.59).  Tuesday's P/E estimate is 15.00 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 15.00 (year ago it was 13.62) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.18 down from  Monday's dividend yield of 2.21 (last year it was 2.40). The Dow's all-time high was 16,945.92 on June1-10,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

6/17/14 Tuesday 4:30    pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says U.S. stocks ended Tuesday slightly higher, with the main benchmarks gaining for the third consecutive day. However, gains were muted as headlines of violence in Iraq did not abate.
After the initial wobble, investors shrugged off mildly disappointing economic reports on inflation and the housing market.
Consumer prices rose sharply in May, while a number of housing starts declined by more than expected. Meanwhile in Iraq, government forces fought with militant rebels, killing 28 ISIS fighters, according to the Wall Street Journal report.
The S&P 500 SPX +0.22%  closed 4.21 points, or 0.2%, higher at 1,941.99. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.16%  added 27.48 points, or 0.2%, to 16,808.49.
The Nasdaq CompositeCOMP +0.37%  ended the day up 16.13 points, or 0.4% at 4,337.23. The Russell 2000 /quotes/zigman/2759624/realtime RUT +0.84%  closed 9.8 points, or 0.8%, higher at 1,176.62, according to preliminary results on FactSet.

Liz Ann Sonders, chief investment strategist at Charles Schwab said that even with the tick-up in the inflation rate, it remains below the Fed’s target.
“Today’s CPI data was slightly higher than expected and did not come to us as a big surprise, but certainly the uptick sparked fears of a possible risk of inflation,” Sonder said.
“On the housing starts, while the headline number was disappointing, the less noisy year-over-year trend is still improving. There are more housing starts this year then there were last year and that’s a positive,” she added.
In economic news, U.S. consumer prices rose sharply in May for the second straight month, prompting fears that the Federal Reserve may begin tightening the monetary policy sooner than the markets are expecting.
Construction on new U.S. homes fell by 6.5% in May and builders trimmed plans for future projects in another sign that a hoped-for spring revival in the housing market remains elusive.
Officials at the Federal Open Markets Committee began their two-day policy-setting meeting.

  • In corporate news , Nuance Communications Inc. NUAN +0.10%  shares climbed 2.5% after reports on Monday that the speech-recognition software maker had held talks with suitors, including Samsung Electronics Co. and private equity funds. Nuance shares are up over 27% this year so far.
Tesla Motors Inc.TSLA -0.44%  shares rose 3.1% building on an 8.8% gain in the previous session over reports about a possible collaboration with its competitors. Tesla shares have climbed 53% year to date.
Shares of Gentiva Health Services Inc. GTIV +5.15%  rallied 5.2% after Kindred Healthcare Inc. KND -3.03% sweetened its bid for the home-health and hospice company.
Shares in E-Trade Financial Corp ETFC +7.74%   and Charles Schwab Corp SCHW +5.49%  rallied 7.7% and 5.5% respectively with the Senate hearing on whether high-frequency trading hurts the markets.
  • In overseas equity markets , European stocks XX:SXXP +0.26%  closed higher. Asian stock were mostly lower, but the Nikkei bucked the trend and finished higher.
  • Among commodities , gold for August deliveryGCQ4 -0.27%  fell Tuesday, posting the first loss in seven sessions, as concerns abated slightly about tensions in Iraq, weighing on the flight to safe-haven assets. Oil futures lost ground Tuesday, giving back some recent gains ahead of an update on weekly U.S. supply levels as worries about imminent risks to oil production in Iraq soften.

6/16/14 Monday 4:37    pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says the U.S. stock market ended Monday’s choppy trading session marginally higher.
The main benchmarks dipped in and out of negative territory as investors weighed upbeat economic reports and deal news against concerns over escalating sectarian violence in Iraq.
Over the weekend, militants in Iraq tweeted out images supporting a claim they had executed hundreds of Shiite Iraqi soldiers. The killings were not verified, according to reports.

As the U.S. and Iran prepare for talks on the declining situation in Iraq, experts say that Washington should not engage with terrorist organizations.
“From the technicals standpoint, markets are slightly extended and until the earnings season we expect stocks to trade sideways with the downward bias,” Sandven said.
Fresh data from the factory sector showed that manufacturing remained a bright spot in the U.S. economy at the end of the second quarter.

Industrial production bounced back in May after a drop in April that wasn’t as bad as initially estimated.
Home builders’ confidence rose in June to the highest level in five months, but respondents were still a bit pessimistic, according to the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo housing-market index released Monday.
