Post No. 2,742 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 7/3/14 and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 7/3/14.
A read of the print editions of Friday's Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 16976.81 down 161.39 or 0.94% from Wednesday's close of 17138.20. For the year the Dow is up 2.41%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Verizon down $4.77 and percentage-wise was Intel down 2.74%.
WSJ pC1 "Investors search for safety" by Chris Dieterich says markets were rattled by a paid of geopolitical flareups Thurs with stocks posting their worst losses in months and investors fleeing to gold and gov bonds. The plane crash & Israel's' invasion of Gaza spooked markets.
NYT pB9 "Shot down plane over Ukraine unsettles indexes" |& AJC pA10 "Airline crash rattles investors" by AP says the downing of a jet rattled the markets sending the 3 major indexes sharply lower.
IBD pB2 "Stocks indexes fall hard; Nasdaq vol increases" by Paul Whitfield says stocks spend most of the session in the red Thurs as the action was down in mixed vol & the current outlook is uptrend under pressure. IBM beat on the top & bottom lines but fell 1%.
FT p19 "UnitedHealth his record high on healthcare reform effect" by Eric Platt says US equity markets declined after the Malaysian plane was shot down. UnitedHealth is charted as it was lifted by a surge in Medicaid enrollment.
As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.54 down from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.70 (last year it was 16.85). Friday's P/E estimate is 15.12 down from Thursday's P/E estimate of 15.13 (year ago it was 13.55) and Friday's dividend yield is 2.18 up from Thursday's dividend yield of 2.14 (last year it was 2.39). The Dow's all-time high was 17068.26 on July 3, 2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2643.56 down 25.13 from Wednesday's numerator of 2668.69. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.12 down 84 cents from Wednesday's average closing price of $88.96. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $82.71 (PG/DIS) up 36 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $82.35 (PG/UNH). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Intel.
If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $2,513 ($266,869 - $264,356).
7/17/14 Thursday 4:04 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahumudova & Victor Reklaitis says U.S. stocks ended sharply lower Thursday as selling took hold after a Malaysia Airlines jet crashed near the Ukraine-Russia border.
Investors turned to assets perceived as havens, such as U.S. Treasurys and gold, pushing their prices sharply higher.
SPX 1,958.12, -23.45, -1.18%
The S&P 500 SPX -1.18% closed down 23.45 points, or 1.2%, to 1,958.12, its biggest one-day drop since April 10. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.94% dropped 161.39 points, or 0.9%, to 16,976.81, its biggest one-day point decline since May 15.

Geopolitical risks intensified after news that a Ukrainian fighter jet was shot down by missiles from a Russian plane. Then came reports that a Malaysia Airlines plane had crashed in Ukraine.
Those developments came after the U.S. unveiled a new round of sanctions against Russia, and the European Union said it would detail new sanctions against Russia by the end of this month. European stocks XX:SXXP -0.94% fell sharply on Thursday.
“Today’s selloff makes sense given that there’s been a concern among investors in the last few months that the U.S. could become more closely intertwined in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia,” said Kristina Hooper, U.S. investment strategist at Allianz Global Investors. She said there are “so many question marks right now” about the news from Ukraine, and it likely will take a few days for investors to process the implications.
“Those investors who have a longer-term time horizon shouldn’t be selling,” Hooper added.
Earlier, the market digested a mixed bag of earnings reports and economic data. Reports on weekly jobless claims and manufacturing activity in the Philadelphia area came in better than expected. But construction on new U.S. homes was far weaker than expected, tumbling to the slowest pace in nine months.
In corporate news, Microsoft Corp. MSFT +0.14% shares rallied 1% after the tech company said it would cut 18,000 jobs over the next year in a bid to simplify operations and integrate its Nokia Devices and Services business. SanDisk SNDK +0.13% shares sank 14% after the flash-memory maker’s third-quarter revenue forecast was lighter than anticipated. Read more about the day’s notable movers here.
After trading closes Thursday, GoogleGOOG +2.40% is expected to post earnings of $6.25 a share on revenue of $12.3 billion. Shares were down 1.7%.
